You must have missed these quotes from today, then.

I understand them but they were given AFTERWARDS, in a PR-ARRANGED interview.

That is why every neutral, including the Observer mocks it....

(A slightly higher regarded source than Murdoch's NotW)

Doesn't that say something when they are looking at it from a less emotional viewpoint?

You yourself mocked Lucas Neill when he claimed that he didn't join West Ham for money.

Tevez & Adebayour claimed they didn't join City for the money.

Do you believe them?

We live in a PR age in which people are coached before they make certain media-appearances.

His actions revealed the truth although what is mildly amusing is that he let the cat slip out of the bag when being honest & not PR-coached.

It is now widely accepted (see that article) that he doubled his wages in moving.

Good luck to him for that- he is a great player & fully deserved it- but to believe anything else is not only naive, but inconsistent with how the board responds to every other footballer who makes the same speech.

(And none of this lets Rafa off the hook for the error of judgement he made last summer, which was a bad one)

Agreed Paul, we can really see how he felt when his book comes out in 5 years time.

No doubt he'll say that it was nothing to do with cash, as with Tevez,Barry,Adebayour & Neill in their books.

Equally Rafa will doubtless claim that he didn't really want to sell him last summer, which will be just as economical with the truth.....

Xabi was my favourite player at the club, so I was really sad and dissappointed that he left. But with what we've heard about the stuff going on, I can accept it through gritted teeth. But I'll never believe he left for the money, as he's never striked me as a person motivated solely by cash. The same goes for Benitez. Of course money is a factor for him, just like for Xabi, but Rafa didn't want to stay here just for the dinero, no way. Noone can be that obsessed about their profession with money being the only thing that drives him. That's why especially atk has pissed me off in the past about the "greedy"-jibes, and getting a payrise etc. It's just tedious bullshit, and I'm glad you've toned it down Al.

I agree. I don't think Rafa or Xabi are overly influenced by money. As Xabi said, it's a factor, but not the main reason.

So you're just believing the quotes that back up your view, whilst ignoring the other ones?

That's your prerogative I suppose, so good luck to you.

The vast elephant in the room of a deal that doubles your pay is more of the key.

Although, usually when someone in any walk of life lets something slip out, it is closer to the truth than when they provide their later PR defence.

I am consistently a cynical old git.

However why did you disbelieve Lucas Neill when he said he didn't move for money?

Lucas Neill turning down Liverpool to sign for West Ham Utd, is absolutely nothing like Xabi Alonso leaving Liverpool to joing Real Madrid. It's chalk and cheese so I have no idea why you keep making the comparison.

I believe that Lucas Neill is motivated by money because he turned down the chance to play in the CL, and potential medals, to sign for a mid-table team.

Alonso has not done the same. He's joined a team capable of winning trophies.

There's absolutely no comparison, and you make yourself look foolish by continually making the point.

I apologise if you have done the figures as it were but have you actually considered the amounts we are talking about.....?

Xabi's move saw him receive an EXTRA £20m in gross pay, or £10m after tax compared to staying at Lfc for another 5 years.

People commit crimes which if caught see them go to jail for life for that sort of money.

Xabi moved jobs......

Even if he is not bothered about personal goods, for that amount he should have moved & then donated that cash to whatever cause or charity he considers more important.

Anyway, I guess you are watching the NFL..... This NYG/Redskins game a bit too one-sided.......

Who gives a fuck.

Let it go and he choose to move to Madrid, maybe just maybe the show of support he got from the people that matter might have changed his mind but he choose Madrid.

Good luck and thanks and all that but I think every angle of this has been debated and debated and debated some more.

I hate Madrid and they are the mancs of Spain, so for that I lost a lot of respect for Xabi. I no longer look at him in the same way.
