I spent the first few seasons confused why this was such a critical darling, but ended in awe of it.

 

I’m rewatching, now, and I still agree with my initial reservations - Don’s backstory is utterly preposterous and Betty’s behaviour in the first season has no consequences - but it really is a marvel of characterisation and thematic resonance.

I always enjoyed it but when explaining it to people it was  like " very little actually happens".
