Anybody been watching this?

I bought the 1st season on DVD and am about 4 episodes in and am not sure what to make of it.

After seeing all the amazing reviews for it, I was expecting it to awesome but I am struggling to see where it's going at the moment.

I'm going to persist with the whole series but was looking for other GF'ers thoughts on it?

Oh, nearly forgot....

....I so would

Girls' telly, in my view. Dull as fuck because nothing ever happens. Mrs Paul loves it, but I fucked it off after about five episodes of the first season. It basically seems to be office gossip as entertainment, but set in the 50s. I concede that I haven't seen the whole thing and may therefore have it wrong, but if something can't hold my attention after five hours of perseverance then the fault lies beyond me, in my view.

I thought the first series was great, intelligent drama. Every minute of it is riveting in a way the Sopranos and The Wire were.

The attention to detail is phenomenal, as is the dialogue.

Looking at it now it's like a different world with the constant Martinis and cigarettes in the office and the open and blatant sexism, xenophobia and homophobia. Everyone in tailor-cuts suits too.

The city life and claustrophobic suburban scenes contrast brilliantly. Everyone in it seems to be living on a lie of some sort - pretty apt giving that they're the pioneers of modern marketing and advertising.

That head secretary is awesome and I wouldn't throw her out of bed for eating crisps.

Don Draper's a smooth fucker too.

I gave it even less of a chance than Paul, the first episode I watched irritated me so much I haven't been back. I just thought it concentrated too much on showing just how many cigarettes they used to smoke (a woman. smoking. while doing the washing up? Woah) to the detriment of any plot. I know it's supposed to be brilliant, but I found it tedious in the extreme. I don't remember seeing that woman though, that may change things considerably.

I loved the bit where they were trying on lippy and she started playing up to the 2 way mirror.

Lovely.

She's not to shabby either, but doesn't seem as slutty:

Peggy Olson is a pig though.

Yes Sireeee Bob, that captured my attention.

I've just done my 'research' for the day and discovered that her name is Christina Hendricks and she is saucier than a direct missile hit on a Sauce shop, as evidenced by:

mad men is a terrific show - possibly my favorite on TV right now.

it takes some time to grow, but the characters are excellent and i just love the 50's style.

january jones (don draper's wife) is drop dead gorgeous....(PG couldn't have posted a less flattering pic than the yellow dress one above)

Mr rb14 and I are half way through the first series, but I've been pushing Dexter. As Mr rb14 is infinitely patient and tolerant, Dexter has prevailed.

Madmen is slow, but it's hugely atmospheric. It's deffo the port-of-call when we've done with Dexter Series 2.

I've just watched the first series and thought it was great, though I can relate to the above 'style over substance' opinion.

I just loved watching what seems like a really well done look at a different era. It's mental seeing how shockingly and openly sexist and racist people were and has changed my opinion on feminism massively (I love lezzas even more now).

The line in the first episode where Peggy is shown her desk is fantastic. Joan (hot redhead (see above)) takes the cover off a massive lump of metal (that is allegedly a state of the art typewriter) and, seeing Peggy's surprised face, says, "Don't be scared by the technology. It's been designed so even a woman can use it."

Blimey.

I haven't watched any of this but find myself unable to let a thread with a pic of Christina Hendricks pass me without comment. She is sex on legs, with a lovely big arse, curves like a racecourse and amazing tits, all topped off with a gorgeous face and a twinkle in the eye that suggests "I'm fucking dirty."

January Jones is gorgeous, but Christina is the one that makes my man mad.

Watched the first 3 seasons on Tv Shack, its pretty good, its a slow burner but the 60's backdrop is ace. This was the thread that introduced me to it. Don is smooth, but he has a really dislikable part to his personality too which is great as there arnt many characters on TV that can be both sides of the coin, a bit like Tony Soprano. Im not coparing the two shows because its not even close, but there are similarities. Its one of the better shows about at the minute.

It wins all the awards it does cos its the best show at the moment but its not that good overall compared to other great recent shows. The attention to detail is very good but it can be boring at times.

Its a 'critics' show in a sense that it looks good/sophisticated with great dialogue, compare that to BSG which was had better acting and stories yet never got the praise or major awards it should have cos it was a Sci-Fi show.

Yeah, but did BSG have a saucy redhead with big tits and fantastic arse in it?
