Matthew Weiner ends standoff and agrees to make series five and six of show with option to commission a seventh

Mad Men creator signs $30m deal | Media | guardian.co.uk

The standoff between the creator, producer and US broadcaster of Mad Men over the show's future has been resolved, with Matthew Weiner signing up for three more years in a deal reported to be worth up to $30m (£18.7m).

US cable channel AMC has ordered series five and six of the critically lauded show and has the option to commission a seventh as part of the three-year deal Weiner has agreed with Mad Men producer Lionsgate.

"These are the last three seasons of Mad Men," Weiner told US entertainment industry news website Deadline Hollywood.

"I'm going to take it one year at a time without the distraction to ever have to go through this again," he added, referring to the protracted negotiations with AMC and Lionsgate. "I'm incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support and overwhelmed that I get to finish telling the stories I want to tell."

Series five, which has already been delayed by the on-off talks about Weiner's new deal, will go into production in July – when the show normally premieres on AMC – and be broadcast in the US from March 2012.

Weiner told Deadline Hollywood he had walked away from the deal "four or five times in the last few days", objecting to proposals to shorten each episode's running by two minutes to make way for more ads, introduce more product placement and reduce the number of regular cast members to save money.

He said the cast was now "safe from financial concerns", but reserved the right to cut actors for creative reasons.

A compromise has been reached on the running time of each episode. The opening and closing episodes of each series will remain at the existing length, 47 minutes, with the 11 in between reduced to 45. Weiner has the option to produce 47-minute versions for download and DVD.

Weiner said there would be no change to the show's existing policy on product placement.

I agree, it put a lot of stock in the show's novelty - the same is true of a lot of shows, like Big love, since American television started diving into unchartered concepts - but doesn't see to have much else going for it. I think I'll keep at it, though, mainly because of the awards it has won and the level of competiton it beat to get them; it is surely something special to have beaten S2 of Breaking Bad.

I've just finished it. It is vastly overrated and the fact it beat the likes of Breaking Bad and Sons is genuinely outlandish. It's a good show, though. It's just not the masterpiece pretentious critics would have you believe.

I've been trying to watch this fucking episode for two goddamn days. The streams keep cutting out.

I could probably recite the first 10 minutes of the show by heart, right now.

Been waiting for season 5 for ages, think it's quality. Obviously doesn't have the panache of some of the other American Series but think it's well put together and cant help but like some of the slimy fuckers in it. The 50's sets and ad copy are brilliant and the office politics I can relate to.

I disagree. The performance of Joan and Peter were superb.

But that episode shows how this show has lost its way this series.

Gone are the slow story and character developments. Gone are the tv like a slow moving painting.

Now its fast, sensationalist and is losing all that was great about it.

In the pursuit of retaining ratings etc it is losing everything that got it its success

I agree that it has felt a bit more 'catchy' this series, but it is still excellent.

Peter's character development (and lack thereof) is terrific. A wonderful, successful misfit. So many shows divide characters into 'winners' and 'losers'. Pete has the job, teh house, the money, the family, and even at times (though not that often) more insight, compassion and understanding that his peers but he just somehow doesn't seem at home in the world. His inability to make the staff happy on the Jaguar announcement, and his lack of success with women this season really develp his neuroses - fantastic acting by the guy that plays him too.
