Hello all,

I have recently been made disabled. Although it is only a knee injury it is looking fairly permanent as I've been told if the operations work I'll be ok in around 2 years, if not I'm on crutches for life.

At the moment I can't get in bed, get out of bed, get dressed, get washed, or prepare food without a great deal of help. I can't drive although I feel that when the initial swelling of the injury reduces I'm sure I'll be able to drive an auto and finally I can't work or anything so.......

the million dollar question is - what am I entitled to / what should I ask for?

Any advice will be a huge help as I've never been in this situation before and I haven't had very good 'experiences' with job centre / social type of people.

How does a dodgy knee stop you from having a wash or putting a couple of pasties in the microwave?

Because its a dislocated knee cap with completely torn tendens and ligaments and severe cartilage dammage.

Knee specialist / surgeon has said he can have a proper look in three weeks when the swelling should be almost gone but until then I'm in a removable cast (the only type when swelling is bad apparently).

In other words I can't use my leg and certain 'movements' are impossible. It was done on sunday and I fainted twice in the hospital due to pain, on sunday night I fainted again and fainted twice yesterday all due to severe pain.

Is there a comedy story behind the knee damage? If so, let's hear it, if not, keep it to yourself.

I broke my fibula and ankle and also fucked over most of the bones in my ankle as a result. Spent a fair few hours in surgery manipulating and putting pins in place, I didn't faint once. I'm hard me.

Am i the only one that thought Robbie was either dead or in prison?

Oh and you'll need to go for sickness/incapacity, but good luck on that one.

Thing to do, get the quack to write you out a sick note, give the DHSS a ring and explain the situation and see if they can either post out the relevant forms, or send someone around to do the forms with your at your home address. For the first couple of months you'll just get dole amount of money without the need to sign on for it.

That link explains it better than I can.

cheers Meat, I've already got a 6 week sick note. The surgeon gave me 6 weeks and said my operation will definately be done before then and he'll get me a new one when he has more idea of how long it is likely to be.

I fucked my ankle big time (tendons, joint, muscles, the lot) once jumping over a wall whilst running away from someone who caught me trying to pinch a pane of perspex to fit as a back window for my mates Reliant Robin. My foot landed in a pothole, twisted and cracked like a goodun. I hopped/crawled to my mates where he took me to the hospital on the back of his motorbike. When we got there we spent an hour or so wheelchair racing whilst waiting to get plastered and painkillered up. After all that was done, he gave me a lift back on his bike with me trying to stay on whilst waving crutches at passing taxis.

I didn't cry once. Go me.

Football I'm affraid. I wish I had a cool sex injury story a la the 'sex injury' thread but hey, maybe I'm to good at sex to get hurt in the process.

Too good at sex not to get an injury.

Listen "Walter Mitty", unless you are having sex with wild animals there would be no reason to tear ligaments in your knee. Now if you hurt your back because some fat slag rolled over on you that would be different, but "too good at sex not to get injured" I am still laughing at that statement.

So you lay in a bed under sedation......... try carrying a broken leg around on 2 paracetamol.

Nah, better then that, had fuck all for pain relief till i got to the hospital, then they offered me paracetamol, then the next day refused a commode and had to hop to the toilet with the support of a health care asst. The initial xray took place after 10pm, it wasn't clear so they thought it was just a broken leg. Till they went in for a good look around the next afternoon. Still with just paracetamol.

That said i have given birth without any pain relief, twice.

You sticking around for a while? we've some right fucktards on here at the moment. Your a known quantity, you've been missed. x

ESA (Emplotment Support Allowance - formerly Incapacity Benefit) and DLA (Disability Living Allowance). Make sure you get a welfare rights worker to advocate for you when applying - you'll most likely encounter fewer fuck ups/delays in the process, plus you're more likely to get a higher rate of benefit. If you get a decent rate of DLA, you will be entitled to the Disability Premium of Income Support, and possibly the Severe Disability Premium and Enhanced Disability Premium (depending on the rate and provided you live alone). Make sure your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claim goes in at the same time you claim for ESA as well, unless you're already getting them.

Welcome.

Also there are a lott of stuff people in the centres will not tell you about so go to the CAB Center and they will tell you what you can claim what i would do is ask for every aplication form to do with disability and fill them out.
