they've apologised

"Yesterday on Newsbeat at 12.45 we broadcast an item on the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 people were killed," it said.

"We said an official report blamed Liverpool supporters for too many fans getting into one part of the stadium that day.

"This was wrong and we would like to apologise to listeners offended by our report and for this error."

We've seen that one, but the damage has already been done, and they won't issue a proper apology saying what really happened.

Just been online and lodged this with the British Bullshit Corporation

"I write to complain concerning the report contained within the Newsbeat programme of 20th April 2009 that related to the Hillsborough Disaster. The comment made that the official report blamed the fans for the disaster and the death of the 96 football supporters was incorrect, defamatory to the fans, ill-judged and ill-timed, following only 4 day after the 20th anniversary. As anyone who has had a modicum of interest within the football world will know, the Taylor report makes clear that the primary cause of the disaster was a failure of police control. As a lifelong football fan who witnessed the disaster first hand, I find the comments broadcast to be disgraceful. Your broadcast was inaccurate, directly in contravention of the code of practice published by the UK Press Complaints Commission. When 2 of your presenters carried out the ‘joke’ phone call both were suspended without pay, one subsequently having his contract terminated. I eagerly await your response and will wait to see what, if any, actions are taken to make amends for this particularly poor journalism." :telloff:

Big thanks to Dave for highlighting yet another piece of piss poor gutter reporting!

Just replied to my pathetic apology email with the following:

"Sorry, but that is simply just not good enough!

It's all well and good issuing an apology saying that it wasn't the fault of the fans, but that doesn't point out who WAS respsonsible - South Yorkshire Police.

You were more than willing to highlight the LIE that fans were responsible, without any research, and yet you seem alarmingly reluctant to highlight THE TRUTH.

Why is that?"

I have today received this -

Dear Miss Byrne

During Steve Blears' report on the possible release of documents relating to the Hillsborough disaster, he incorrectly stated that an official inquiry had blamed supporters' behaviour for overcrowding at the stadium.

We sincerely apologise for both the reporter's error and for the fact that it was not picked up on by the duty editor prior to broadcast. The editor of Newsbeat has been made aware of the error and offers assurances that it will not be repeated.

The following correction was made during 'Newsbeat' at 12.45pm on 21 April and appears on the programme's website:

"Yesterday on Newsbeat we broadcast an item on the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 people were killed. We said an official report blamed Liverpool supporters for too many fans getting into one part of the stadium that day. This was wrong and we would like to apologise to listeners offended by our report and for this error."

Radio 1 Newsbeat

  • 2 weeks later...

Ofcom will do nothing. Radio 1 broadcast something incorrectly and then almost immediately apologised in writing and on the Radio. That will be seen as more then enough.

I get worried that all we are doing now is constantly bringing up an error that never received any further airplay and was never discussed further in the public domain and so we are the ones who are keeping it in the public eye. We've complained, they've apologised. We should be concentrating on the push for justice through the papers that are going to be released by the courts and on dealing with Steve Cohen and his constant lies. We are just dragging the Radio 1 thing to a slow death in my opinion and they're will be no further outcome then what has already happened. The BBC have been very good, particularly their Hillsborough program on the day of the Blackburn game.
