Just finished collected editions 4 and 5 of 'The Wicked and the Divine', a stupendous comic about a Pantheon of gods brought to life in the 21st Century. It's written by a mate of mine's brother who has written some equally terrific stuff such as 'Uber' and Marvel's Darth Vader series. He has every teen geeks ideal job.

Some other good recent reads include:

Naomi Klein's 'No Is Not Enough', an anti-Trump manifesto which brings together ideas and themes from her other work.

'The Fifth Season' by N K Jemisin, the first book in a fantasy series, set in a world where a catastrophic climate event occurs every few centuries. I immediately bought the other two books in the series; the first two won the Hugo Award and the third is tipped to win this year, which is pretty astonishing.

I have the first three TPBs of 'Sex Criminals' to start this weekend, which are supposed to be good (the series has just been optioned for TV). I also need to catch up on 'Saga' and 'The Walking Dead' and make a start on 'Y:The Last Man'.

I keep an eye on Kieron’s work as I like to see video game reviewers do well (Gary Whitta is the other one, writing Hollywood screenplays). Ive often wondered how lucrative writing succesful comics is. Do you get the feeling its a decent living like say being an accountant or is it £100k’s per year? Sorry to be vulgar

New Irvine Welsh book due out in the next couple of weeks. Dead Mens Trousers. It is supposedly the last story that features all the usual characters from Trainspotting, Porno, Skagboys. His last two books were a bit of an anti climax. I really hope he produces the goods this time. Skagboys was excellent and is one of my favourite books ever. His output has been a bit patchy though in recent years in comparison to his earlier stuff.

Started re-reading all the Charlie Parker books, having done all the Elvis Coles again before Christmas. However, I’m taking a short detour to read Road Brothers by Mark Lawrence, a book of short stories set in the world of his Broken Empire.

I knew there was something else I was supposed to download.

Superpredator: Bill Clinton's use and abuse of black America. 8.5/10

Left wing critique of the Clinton presidency, 240 pages, a really easy read, insightful, sharp and pretty bold. The operative thesis is that because Clinton was a neo, 3rd way, politician he was charming and said the right things but because one has to fight for minority rights, he caved excessively for political capital. It actually goes a bit further in calling Clinton an aider and abetter of the Rwandan genocide.

It's very well sourced and challenges you to contradict the conclusions. As I said, he's a bit too sweeping in his condemnation for my tastes, but it is clear how he got there.

He's got an online magazines that is boss, and worth checking out, too.

Finally got around to reading Altered Carbon. Good stuff, but I feel I might rate it a little lower than some.

I'd have preferred it stayed a bit more futuristic noir and grounded for the climax. The first 200 pages are some of the best sci-fi thriller I've ever read, but the final chapters go a touch gung-ho and generic, as it seems between the protagonist and the AI hotel they can do just about anything imaginable. Sort of undermines the build up of tension that precedes it.

I want to get onto Ready Player One now, before the film opens.
