calling all canadian reds, or fellow travellers, just a bit of advice really.

im going over on monday, july 20th, for a year and gonna do a bit of backpacking but try stay mostly in toronto and hopefully vancouver.

whats the premiership coverage like over there? i dunno how much internet time im gonna get, so im sacrificing my fantasy footy team and my premiership predictions for a year, still gonna try make time for xpert11...but am i fuck gonna sacrifice liverpool time in what could be a big season for us...

do they show many games in bars? is it reported on news channels? i dont wanna be totally out of the loop!

Not sure about this season, but last year there was everything. I think I missed 2 games all season - in fact, even the games not shown in the UK are often shown here.

Nothing on the news, but Setanta is still operating here. Fox Soccer Channel has a daily news programme with 4 wankers and Bobby McMahon - it's ok. You'll definitely get your fix in Toronto & Vancouver, plenty of bars showing it all.

Have a good trip and stay away from Keiths, Blue & Moosehead - the hangovers will kill you.

the only thing i'll add is that 3:00pm kickoffs means 7:00am in vancouver. substitute pubs, cigarettes and beer with a cup of tea and some toast.

if the matches start early, then you might want to stay in an eastern time zone.

ah that'll be nice before the missus gets up, or it could be awkward if we're both still up "socialising" and i wanna kill the dj for some footy!

we'll be on east coast for the start of the season so il worry about the rest then...i jst wanted to see what the premiershib vibe is like over there. coming from ireland its like living in england so im use to hourly reports on all radio stations...

Sportsnet has the rights to the CL this year; Setanta holds the PL rights (except for one match on Sportsnet) and Carling Cup and FA Cup. Setanta costs aboot 15 CDN $ a month.

Moosehead is fine for hangovers, agree aboot Keiths and Blue- especially Blue- in faact, any Canadian mass produced pilsner is headache inducing in quantity.

Oh, and the binmen are still on strike in Toronto so it might be a bit stinky when you get there. As well, everyone who phone number code is not 416 or 905 hates/laughs/derides Toronto.

After all, this is a Canadian city who had to call in our army to clear a heavy snowfall....

If you're in Toronto head over to Scallywags. That's where the official Toronto LFC supporters meet so it will be a good atmosphere. Always remember we're 5 hours behind so the early afternoon kickoffs are a killer at about 7 in the morning. Setanta Canada is still running far as I know so a lot of games will be on there. It will be on in your fair share of local pubs but it's best to call in advance to confirm. The Champions League gets shown on TSN (and TLN if it's Italian teams).

If you want highlights just put on channel 44 on any basic cable network and you'll get updates on The Score.

Other than that, enjoy your trip!

TSN lost the Champions League to Rogers Sportsnet so that means we get Gerry Dobson and Craig Forrest . I`m not sure that is a good thing.

In Ottawa I think it`s the Heart and Crown where Reds go, it used to be the Georgetown on Bank St between Landsdowne and Rideau River.

If by East Coast you mean Nova ScotiaéNew Brunswick and you are bypassing Newfoundland than you are making a very bad error. Go to St Johns in the early morning and wait for the sewage bubble in the Harbour. LÀnse aux Meadows where all the Norgies ancestors landed 500 years before Cabot; outports (watch The Shipping News), almost as many moose as people, Signal Hill, and George Street in St Johns- the highest concentration of bars in canada amoungst the highest concentration of heavy drinkers. Allegedly on George Street the women pick you out of the crowd and violate you.

Scallywags is one boss little pub. I love my trips to Toronto, as I head down there in the mornings, have breakfast, watch the match and then start getting plastered with the lads when the ale starts flowing at 11. Some good reds in there, and it's very, very rare to have one of our games not available on the telly.

Stay away when the Olympics are there, rental costs are throught the roof.

I heard the Vancouver branch is going great guns.

NP fact:

The only province I have never visited.

Ghostie and I watched the 07 final there with the canuck reds and it was class.

Loads of ex-pats and a generally good atmosphere.

No idea how the atmosphere would be for a Sunday morning kick off against burnley, but I would imagine it would be good.

Oh thanks for that! Most of the time I never figure these things out no matter how hard I try and only discover it a day or two before the games!

p.s. I watch my CL on ESPN anyway. I get American satellite.

They were just starting up the supporters club in Vancouver last time I was there, but I've heard good things since. If they're still meeting at the library square pub, it's a nice place to watch the match, although its a bit pricey. They go in for the whole flat-screen plasma tellies all over the place, instead of one main screen for everyone to watch, which makes the atmosphere a bit weak because you're all staring in different directions... When you're not staring at the fit ladies who bring you beer.

Whatever you do, don't come to Edmonton. It's shit.

Gerry Dobson, a man who hosts programs about downhill skiing, and Craig Forrest, a man who once got a match in goal for West Ham and has all the charisma and dynamic personality of a brown paper bag. I'd almost sooner have Tommy Smith, if it wasn't for the insult he delivers that fine footballing name.

If you go drinking in Newfoundland, sew a tag into your underkecks with your name and address on them. That way when you wake up, you'll know where you belong.

You have to love Forrest and his rants during Canada WC qualifying on CONCACAF refs....

Tommy Smith needs to be wrapped in an onion bag and dropped from an aeroplane.

And Edmonton does have a nice airport.

Is Toronto a good place to live? I might be made redundant shortly and it may be the kick up the arse that makes me move somewhere different. I've seen a few well paid jobs in Toronto which I'm well qualified for but I'm not sure about cost of living and the like, health care, food, rent where is good to live and where is shit.
