Liverpool Vs Fulham - Wednesday 3 May at 20.00

Recommended Posts

Part two of this week's trilogy of home games.  I honestly haven't got anything against Fulham - the only fan of theirs I know is Richard Osman; and they hate Chelsea, so they can't be all bad.  Still, we need the points, so fuck 'em.

Just get these beat, Reds.

I discussed momentum and complacency in the Spurs match thread, and they both turned out to be key factors. We got the 3 points (just) to keep up our recent league momentum, but complacency reared its head after 20 minutes and there was an awful lot of sloppiness from us after that. Spurs hit the woodwork 3 times as well as scoring 3 goals. We were fortunate that Spurs were still capable of Spursing it up after that.

The Fulham game is the second of 3 home games in a week, and needless to say momentum and complacency are still the watchwords. Fulham’s form has been fairly patchy in recent months, partly down to things levelling off and partly because Mitrovic is a big miss for them. He and they proved to be a handful against us on the opening day, and that game has proven to be a significant indicator of the season to come rather than merely a bad day at the office for us. What do we need though?

Bravery. Organisation. Accuracy. Tactical nous. Ruthlessness. Alertness. Composure. Efficiency.

I don’t ask for much.

Our last home game against them was in March 2021 when we were on that awful run of results at home. The Cottagers claimed the points thanks to a goal at the end of the first half from Lemina. We just didn’t get going in this game.

It was a lot better on the home front in early December 2006. Fulham came to Anfield and got spanked 4-0 as we turned the screw after a goalless first half. Stevie opened the scoring by converting the rebound after seeing his penalty saved, and Lil Luis got the second with a cracking header. So far so normal. What wasn't normal was the lesser-spotted Mark Gonzalez finding the net with a sweetly taken free kick late on. Even more abnormal was the fact that even Carra got on the scoresheet. At the right end. He slid in to convert at the far post after a flick-on from a corner. At the time, we had been reliant on our home form as our away form in the league was much like our home form at the beginning of 2021 with a chronic lack of goals, points and performances. We were getting results at Anfield to keep us in with a shout of making the top 4 again. We were also getting results in Europe and would reach the Champions League final again for a rematch with Milan, where a more pro-active approach might well have paid off for us. Can't find any Youtube footage so here's the Beeb's match report of the Fulham game.

The box office smash on 9th December 2006 was Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, set in 16th century Yucatan Mexico. Not unlike Gibson’s Passion of the Christ, much of the dialogue is based on the dialects of the time, in this case the Mayan language. I remember skimming past this one night on one of the movie channels but never watched it as it’s the sort of story you can’t really dip into part-way through. Invasion. War. Bloodshed. A fictional tale set to the backdrop of real historical events. It’s meant to be very good. Any of you lot able to verify?

Decide early on what sort of tempo we want to set and stick with it, on the proviso that we concentrate and work hard enough to up it where necessary instead of a 15-minute whirlwind followed by a dramatic tail-off. With 3 games in a week, going full pelt while trying to maintain momentum and achieve consistency might not be the smartest move, but we still need to be smart. No slacking, no thinking the job is done if we are a few goals to the good, no faffing about at the back, and the sub forwards need to ensure they bring some real dynamism to proceedings. Three points please.

It does not get any bigger than this, Fulham under the lights in a dead rubber at the end of a shitey season.

In all seriousness, I think it's important we finish the season on a high & I would love to see us win all our remaining fixtures, including this one against these inoffensive cunts.

Pre-Pre Season

Finish as high up the table as possible and do some leg work on bedding in a new system.

A starting midfield of Henderson, Fabinho and Jones and just Milner and Elliott as sub options.

The rebuild required in midfield is fucking enormous isn't it and what really hammers that paucity of options home is there is not a single what you would call peak/prime 38 game a season player missing tonight from starting 11 or bench - just a collection of crocks and wastes of time who could/should all be leaving in summer.
