Michael Owen claims his focus is on returning to fitness for Newcastle rather than the World Cup finals.

England international striker Owen has plenty of time to think about the future at present as he is currently sidelined with a foot injury.

The World Cup has been in the spotlight in recent weeks due to the revelations surrounding manager Sven Goran Eriksson and Owen has urged the media to allow the Swede to concentrate on his summer planning.

Owen is looking for a line to be drawn under the affair and claims his focus is on returning to fitness and aiding Newcastle in the final weeks of the season.

"The World Cup is the furthest thing from my mind," he told Sky Sports News. "When it comes it will be a massive tournament, but Newcastle is what I have got to get back to.

"Hopefully I can play a nice part in the end of the season and that could set me up nicely for the World Cup, but the World Cup is the second thing on my mind at the moment."

Newcastle have had a disappointing season, with their league position failing to do justice to the money spent in the summer and the pressure is certainly on manager Graeme Souness.

Owen has backed Souness to turn the club's fortunes around, despite many Newcastle fans calling for the Scot to fall on his sword.

"I was attracted by his managerial style as well as many other things, but I was impressed with him and his staff and I am sure that when we get some confidence back in the team and we can get a couple of lads back in the team then things will look up again," stated Owen.

Learning how to handle the media, not changing his priorities though in my opinion.

Oh deffo! Yeah i don't for one second think its genuine, "atracted to Souness management style" Hmmm

Its been said time and agian that he alienated some fans with his constant England talk, but i suppose its hard to tell if allot of it was simply edited by the media. I always though a bit of both...

If anyone has read OWens Autobiography, it spells out what is important to him.. for someone who couldn't give a toss about England, (I'd rather our lads got a summers rest and be back fresh for a tilt at the title rather than pissing about in Germany)... Owen's book is 75% England and 25% Liverpool... I didn't even bother finishing it... Still have him back at Liverpool next season though as he'll always score goals, but his priority is England and then club second... He even spelt it out why his name was never the first to be sung by the Kop.... Whereas Robbie made his name with Liverpool, Owen made his name with England.. Robbie will always be remembered for the goals he scored in a Liverpool shirt, Owen will be remembered for "That" goal against Argentina in France '98........
