Outgoing Barcelona boss Xavi says his successor will "suffer" in the role.

The Spaniard, 44, was sacked before taking charge of their final game of the season - a 2-1 win over Sevilla.

Former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick is set to replace him.

Xavi, who was under contract until 2025, said he was going to leave the club in January but performed a U-turn, announcing he was staying on at Camp Nou in April.

He said: "To the new manager, I tell you: 'You will suffer'. This is a very complicated place to be. This is a difficult job and you have to be patient."

The former Spain midfielder took over as head coach in November 2021 and won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in his first full season in charge.

This season they finished second in La Liga, 10 points behind champions Real Madrid.

Xavi's sacking came a month after Barcelona confirmed he would stay at the club. It followed comments he made about the club's financial struggles, which were said to have angered president Joan Laporta.

"I have the feeling that everything I have done in these two and a half years has caused an earthquake," he said. "I have been targeted many times in many situations."

Xavi said his work at the club "not been sufficiently appreciated" and said of the decision to sack him: "I had no choice but to accept it. It doesn't matter if I agree with the arguments."

The former Barca player said he is open to a new job but thinks he also needs to "rest a little bit".

"It's so difficult to coach Barcelona," he added. "It's been tough last week, but I have my conscience very clear. I'm proud and happy."

Methinks de Zerbi has massively overplayed his hand the last few months.

As long as he's not found to be a busted flush at our expense, I'm fine with wherever he goes.

The era of the monopoly is now definitively over’ – Spanish judge rules in favour of European Super League

A Spanish judge ordered soccer ruling bodies FIFA and UEFA to halt their opposition to a parallel European competition known as the European Super League (ESL), ruling they were practising anti-competitive behaviour and abusing their dominant position.

Judge Sofia Gil Garcia ruled the governing bodies violated European Union law by banning clubs from participating in a proposed new professional soccer championship, a court statement said on Monday.

In the ruling, Gil Garcia also ordered FIFA and UEFA to immediately reverse any anti-competitive actions committed in the past.

The case was brought by A22 Sports Management, the sports development company behind the plan to create the ESL, against the Spanish Soccer Federation, Spain's LaLiga, UEFA and FIFA, who had blocked the ESL.

"The era of the monopoly is now definitively over," A22 CEO Bernd Reichart said in a statement after the ruling, calling it "an important step towards a truly competitive and sustainable club football landscape in Europe".

Reichart added that UEFA had stifled innovation for decades and clubs "should not have to fear threats of sanctions simply for having ideas and conversations".

Gil Garcia's ruling followed a similar decision by the European Court of Justice in December.

In a Monday statement, La Liga insisted the ruling does not explicitly support the creation of the Super League.

The proposal in 2021 of a breakaway league by Europe's 12 leading clubs sparked widespread protests among fans and threats of sanctions by UEFA, leading nine of them to pull out.

A22 had said UEFA and FIFA held a monopolistic position that breached the EU's Competition and Free Movement Law.

The ECJ ruled against UEFA and FIFA, though it did not comment specifically on whether the ESL could go ahead.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and nine other top European clubs announced the plan in April, 2021.

The move collapsed within 48 hours, however, after a public outcry that forced Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid to withdraw.

I wonder how Real and Barca paid for that judgement?

But why are Chelsea all of a sudden going for him, don't get it. What's so special about Maresca?

Edit; I see he is another one linked with Guardiola, what, do Chelsea, Bayern etc think that Guardiola has some kind of Mida's touch and everyone working with him or playing for him is now inspired by a divine light or something?

Defo the Guardiola link has helped him. They're hoping he can replicate what Arteta is doing at Arsenal.  Spend a shit load and create a very good team.

Yup, thought he could either bag himself a new big boy job or pressure Tony Bloom in to breaking Brightons transfer structure by being a silly bollocks in front of the press, instead found out Tony Bloom is as ruthless as they come and now has no job.

And apparently still isn’t free to new employers. Rumours are Brighton are still entitled to £4m from his next employer!
