Watched them all last night. Heartbreaking stuff, but how was NASA so fucked up, with nobody allowed to speak up or voice concerns/challenge colleagues?

Finished it yesterday. It was jaw dropping at times, and as you say, heartbreaking stuff.

To think the top of an organisation such as NASA would be rammed full of self important idiots and sycophants was quite jarring

15 billion miles away...

Thanks, good article, I've corrected the distance though...

It's such a shame we don't do pioneering stuff like this anymore, one of the comments is spot on-

Perhaps someday we will take great voyages again. For now, it appears we are in a downward spiral, closing in on ourselves, distracted with our little power plays and trivia. Sic transit gloria mundi.

To be fair Nasa put a helicopter on Mars and we could see high definition photos, that was pretty pioneering.

It was ok in the space race - virtually unlimited funds and test pilots/astronauts were expendable. That just wouldn't go now.

Looks like the new space race will be fought by private companies with some national involvement.

Plus, space is really fucking big and really fucking dangerous. Humans just aren't meant to be in space for a long time, or on other planets. The technology doesn't exist to make it work.

That's kind of what I meant (aside from the expendable people). Budgets were massively pared back and it's more about potential private profit now rather than kudos.
