The Official Raheem Sterling Thread (Part 412)

Sterling was brilliant last season. He's young so I understand you don't bump him up to the highest wages after one good season aged 19 but the fact remains we played chicken with his contract situation, as with other players, and we lost. We didn't even attempt to offer parity with Lambert's wages, following Sterling's good start to this season.

No. Ratcatcher says Sterling was only good for 12 games, he's repeated it so many times it must be true.

He should have been on more than £30 grand a week, bearing in mind how he had progressed and the fact he was getting regular starts for England.

Should have been offered £60- 70 grand a week at the end of last season and at further points that would have been reviewed.

And im saying this as one of Sterling's biggest critics and someone who thinks he is overrated.

Dont forget Rodgers called him the best young player in Europe. Made a rod for his own back with that statement.

Agree to a degree, however, being called up for international duty doesnt mean you are entitled to a pay rise for one.

You can list a huge amount of players called up who were and maybe still are shite....

Agree he should have been given a better contract to some degree, but 100% increase on his basic wage? for what?

As many have said, 12 to 14 games does not make a super star.

And anything rodgers says, again does not make a player worth 3 or 4 times their basic.

He bought Balotelli, Lovren, Sakho, Mingolet, etc and they arent worth their cost

RS has the potential, but in all honesty (and I have always slated him) he isnt what he, or his agent think he is.

Runs fas,t has 20 attempts and does 1 good thing, if thats worth £100k plus a week, then im signing tomorrow.

Well people were still talking about whether we should loan him out in January so the claim that he was great all season is a bit strange.

He had a great two or three months, during which he got a pay rise.

It's hardly negligence to keep him on that deal for a year and see how he goes before giving him another bump. And, as his agent says, it isn't about money...apparently.

I disagree that he was brilliant last season anyway. He was basically a speedster who was afforded a lot of time and space because of the threat of his two immensely more talented teammates (Suarez and Sturridge) and he profited from that, to his credit (you still have to put the goals away) and our benefit. But put him in a side that needs intelligence, guile and guts, and watch him flounder.

According to the Beeb, Man City are preparing a 45 million bid for him. Konoplyanka, who, according to management a couple of years ago is the answer to all are problems but was too hard/expensive to sign, is available on a free.Would be a great swap, if it wasn't for Ayres doing the negotiations.

If Brendan has any sense, he won't play Raheem against Stoke. Because he is deluding himself if he thinks the fans won't boo him if he plays.

In my opinion he just needs to try and nip this all in the bud now and keep the young lad out of the headlines as much as he can until we've get a suitable offer for him or the kid has a change of heart and signs a new contract.

He's hardly said anything untoward there.

Wenger had no reason to say anything at all about another club's player - and as he's been using John Cross to plant stories about his plans to bid for him, if you think that's an innocent intervention you must be very naive indeed. He's the great hypocrite of English football, always posing as the manager who takes the moral high ground when in reality he's as grubby and graceless as they come.

Fans certainly thought Sterling was good. I don't actually think he was anywhere near Suarez in any regard but it shows how perceptions have massively changed if nothing else.

sturridge was injured for half of last season. Sterling played in most of our games. That's why he was ranked higher. then you have to take into account that almost every single goal of his was set up by Suarez. fair play to him, he did convert them, but this season has shown what a terrible finisher he really is.

he's a decent player, but I don't think that he's the next big thing as some would have you believe. all too often he goes missing in tough games, and his shooting is just atrocious.his biggest redeeming factor would be his pace which is astounding, and that was a huge factor in his success with us last season.

this season he's really struggled against teams who choose to sit deep against us, and has shown a lot of poor decision making on the ball.

fact is, he's not irreplaceable. no-one in our current squad is. I'd go so far as to say that the position in which he plays is one of the easiest to find decent players at a similar level to him in. off the top of my head players who I'd readily replace him with, and consider it an upgrade in some:

Iturbe

Felipe Anderson

Douglas Costa

Walcott

Giovinco

Pedro

Tello

whether any of them are get-able...

How much can we get Fermino for? Him, Coutinho and shiney new Striker puts us in a better position than we're in now.

The thing about Sterling is that his ceiling is at a world class level but we're seriously kidding ourselves if we think we'd see his best years at Liverpool.

Theres lots of talk about him being booed tomorrow at Stoke and him and his agent using that scenario to say his position at the club is untenable. The fans should just give him no reception whatsoever, complete apathy. That'd be the best possible response to this. Give him and his agent zero ammunition, they've already made themselves look like idiots anyway.

Besides he's not good enough to warrant hate, he's a nobody, he's achieved nothing in the game and quite frankly i couldn't give a flying fuck whether he goes or not, would much rather have Yarmolenko in his place.
