Europa League Winners Get Champions League Spot

Europa League winners could earn Champions League place Comments (127) Uefa will announce on Friday whether the Europa League winners will be rewarded with a Champions League qualifying spot from 2016. The move would be designed to boost interest in Europe's secondary club tournament. The decision follows months of discussions between the European Club Association (ECA) and Uefa officials. Europa League winners 2013: Chelsea 2012: Atletico Madrid 2011: Porto 2010: Atletico Madrid 2009: Shakhtar Donetsk Meanwhile, Berlin's Olympic Stadium has been revealed as the venue for the Champions League final in 2015. That year's Europa League decider will be at Warsaw's National Stadium, which staged the opening game of Euro 2012. The Europa League generates far less income and media attention than the Champions League. The governing body has tried a number of initiatives to increase interest, with previous attempts including the change of name from Uefa Cup to its current title in 2009. Currently, teams who finish third in their Champions League group drop into the competition. This season's final was contested between two teams who entered that way, Chelsea beating Benfica 2-1 in Amsterdam. Uefa is also expected to announce it will raise the maximum number of Champions League qualifiers per country from four to five, if the winners of the Europa League from 2015-16 do not finish in their domestic league's qualifying places for the Champions League. Should the winners of both European competitions come from the same country and not finish in their league's qualifying places, both would be in the Champions League the following season. Uefa is keen to avoid a repeat of the scenario that happened in the Premier League in 2011-12 when Chelsea won the Champions League and Tottenham were placed into the Europa League despite finishing fourth in the top flight.

Even more reason for Champions League drop outs not to be allowed into the Europa League.

Yeah and what happens if the EL winner also qualifies through being in the relevant league places?

Will the EL runner up get the CL spot instead?

UEFA have devalued the UEFA Cup \ EL over the years and I dont really see this suggestion strengthening it really. They need to divert 25% or more of the income and sponsorship from the CL to the EL to give the clubs in the EL a stronger financial footing.

At the moment, only clubs in the CL really see the benefit of extra cash. So what if the EL winners get a CL spot? Its only going to benefit one club a season. They need to spread the pot of cash around to even things up.

Fuck giving leagues an extra spot if the Europa League winner finishes outside the leagues CL qualifier spots.

Reward winners not losers, 4th should always drop out in such a situation and those who actually win something should get their place.

Spot on. The "Arsenal model" is corroding the League and lowering the overall standard. It is perverse that you can finish 16 points off top but still essentially get the same rewards.

Agree also that CL drop-outs shouldn't get anywhere near the EL. That more than anything devalues it. It's the Plate for the CL also-rans who can be arsed with a sprinkling of FC Whothefuck's. No wonder noone wants to pay to watch it.

I broadly agree.

In practise the EL winners are likely to be CL qualifiers anyway so i am not sure it will make all that much difference.

I do think that the teams that win their league get insufficent advantage for doing so.

its a good idea, I think the Europa League has gradually become more and more tinpot and as such I'm not remotely arsed that we're not in it next year but I think giving the winners a Champions League spot will make it more worthwhile but also agree this should see the end of Champions League dropouts or it will badly distort future qualifiers with extra spaces allocated due to winners already qualifying

A good idea.

Also domestically I think the FA Cup winners should get the 4th qualifying spot. Not falling back to the runners up if the winner has qualified as currently happens with the Europa League spot, and not for the League Cup either, just the winners of the primary domestic cup competition for any nation with two or more qualifying spots.

Just put more money into the Europa League and make it a straight knock tournament from the start with no group stages like the FA Cup.

People would be a lot more interested in the early rounds if you could have ties like Liverpool v Athletico Madrid in round one and the loser goes home, this would also mean that teams would have play a good strength side each time.

You can't make the competition more lucrative and risk the winners of an Liverpool v Athletico Madrid early round knockout tie leaving the competion early on.

Why not?

It would mean that a lot more interest in the early rounds and the odds of the big clubs drawing each would be slim but if it did happen they would need to field a full team instead of playing the ressie's until the quarter finals?
