Tough one that. Although not retired, he's not currently playing at professional level.

I was going to ask this but I honestly came to the conclusion no, because there's no guarantee that he'll ever play again, hence he's retired until he's played again IMO.

I tend to agree. As of the day the draft started, he was not playing at professional level. However, if the powers that be decide that the selection is OK, then I'd have no qualms about it either.

I think that's accurate.

 

I really wanted to sneak in a pick for Essien - he hasn't officially retired yet either, but the Indonesian club he was contracted to cancelled his contract in May and though he's listed as their player in some places still he hasn't played for them since March and I decided that it looks like he wouldn't qualify. After all, if you don't have a contract with a club IMO you can't really be calling yourself an active professional player.
