At the turn of the century, Brazil had a pretty shit team despite still containing the likes of Cafu, Carlos, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho. Ronaldo was in the middle of that 2-year spell where he was always out injured and the Brazilians were picking average fare like Vampeta and Franca. It's because of their poor results causing them to struggle in World Cup qualifying that there hired Scolari in the first place. They qualified by the skin of their teeth and went on to win the World Cup in 2002.

 

The key thing is that while results had been poor, they still had a core of outstanding players. You can't say that about the current crop. Their over-reliance on Neymar has shown up just how uncreative and lacking in any sort of fluidity they've become.
