Plenty of crap in the last two pages from the Lucas brigade. Let me refresh your memory. Lucas was signed in 2007 from Gremio, under Rafa, as a deep playmaker (e.g. Pirlo, Alonso), the position he played in Gremio and the Brazilian National Youth team.

 

After two seasons it was obvious that he did not have the passing skills, the technique or the football brain to dictate games the same way players in his natural position did. Consequently and with Alonso's departure, Rafa decided to splash the cash on Aquilani for that position and convert Lucas into a DM, a back-up for Mascherano. Aquilani's injury mystery, let us play almost an entire season with Lucas, Gerrard and Mascherano as our starting midfield, when we finished 7th. After Mascherano's departure, he had a starting place alongside, Meirelis, Poulsen, Charlie Adam etc... for the following 2--3 seasons.

 

In 2014 under different owners, a different manager and a different football philosophy it is not unreasonable to expect us to improve in his position and sign a more skilful and athletic player. He is incredibly slow he concedes free kicks in dangerous positions, he cannot break counterattacks and his decision making is very slow as well, to the point the opposition players the spectators, the TV viewer know where is he going to pass the ball or what he is about to do 2-3 seconds before he acts.
