Watched Part II again last night.

Controversial opinion - I don't think it's ageing as well as the original. To be fair, I'm not sure many films do. Part I is perfection.

Why do you think it’s not ageing well?

I wouldn't say it isn't ageing well, just not as well as Part I.

It's little things really. Don Fanucci looks more and more like a Simpsons parody. I think the score is almost over-used at times, playing on its iconic nature. Then you've got moments like the humorous landlord scene. De Niro's Brando impression deserves more scrutiny too.

Not saying it isn't a stone-cold classic, but I think much of its appeal is built on the original, and perhaps some minor flaws are overlooked because of that.

Nah.

Part II is perfection. Part I has the missed punch from Sonny, which should never have made the cut, other than that, it is also perfection.

The one thing Part I had that II didn't was a typical (and much simpler) story arc.

Beginning, middle, end.

There's something to be said for that. (Just look at the amount of half-written garbage that's out there now.)

Though I think II is a masterpiece.

Don't forget the unconscious Don Corleone suddenly pulling his hand away from a door jamb as Michael moves the bed during the hospital scene. Still take first film over the second; time shifts and the obviously plastic gold phone wrecked Godfather 2 - even though I still found it quite brilliant . Still think the production should have shelled out for a real gold phone.

Watching Coda right now.

It's still a bad film, no matter how it's cut. The script is so clunky, Sofia Coppola's acting is the least of its problems. Robert Duvall did well to swerve it. It's closer to a '90s Columbo episode in acting than the first two films.
