Carragher

Gerrard

Alonso

I really wanted to get Fabio in there as well, but he just misses out.

Really rate your articles and agree with most of your opinions, skipper, but I think you (and a few others) are way off with the rating of our captain today. Thought he looked disinterested and dare I say, a bit lazy during the first half. Thought he was the main culprit behind Chelsea's good period mid 1st half, as he wasn't closing their defenders down properly. Undeniably much better in the second half, but not on a par with Alonso by any means, and I thought both Fabio (as you say) and Riera and possibly Agger stood out more than Gerrard today..

No big deal, and probably shouldn't write this, but irks me a bit that Gerrard needs to play piss poor for him to be excluded from the honours list;)

Anyway, today is a great day, and I am enjoying it fully. Too bad the ref didn't give West Ham the penalty they perhaps should have had at 1-0 to the Arse today (Adebayor scored in the following counter-attack).

Could be anybody other than Reina, as he bascially had f**k all to do for 90 minutes. Will go for:

1. Alonso - For the composure, the way he made everything tick, the goal and, of course, the bad ass stubble.

2. Carragher - For everything else.

3. Riera - For rarely looking like he is going to beat his man, and then doing so. On a number of occassions.

(1) CARRAGHER - The word "immense" gets bandied about so often but carra was massive yesterday, god i'm gonna miss him when he goes.

(2) ALONSO - He's one of the 1st names on the team sheet as far as i'm concerned, the fact that he stood up to mongo made his performance today even better.

(3) RIERA - I honestly can't remember anyone on our left flank from the past 5 years who comes close to this guy, why oh why did we stick with that overweight kangaroo eating bastard on the left for so long?

Whilst I noticed the same thing as you, I had a different interpretation of it. It looked to me like Gerrard was under orders to stay up front in order to be a threat on the break. I actually found it encouraging that we were able to contain them without him and also that we didn't feel the need to negate all our attacking options with defensive work. It struck me that Rafa knew a second goal would be decisive and he therefore wanted Gerrard and Keane ready to take one if it came. Furthermore, Chelsea were unable to throw Mikel and/or Terry forward with abandon due to the threats posed by our two forwards.

That last twenty minute period of the first half made for uncomfortable viewing, but we weathered the storm. I thought Gerrard, whilst not in my top three, put in one of the most composed and mature displays I've ever seen from him. He said earlier in the season that Rafa has improved him and I saw the evidence out on the pitch yesterday.
