Yeah that Van Persie signing was a shrewd as any I've seen in the PL.

The context for that earlier discussion is baffling, though.  And I don't know if "shrewd" is the right word, either, Stig.

Van Persie had just netted 37 goals for Arsenal, his best total, and was at the very top of his game.  He was one of the best players in the Premier League.

Nobody could pay what is the equivalent of £60m for a bloke with one year left on his contract.  They paid £24m for him when the average transfer fee was £5m (today it is £18).  It was almost unheard of, and nobody else had the financial clout to do it.

He bought him because they had just lost the league.  They bought him because they could.  Only City and Chelsea outside of United possibly could.

The argument earlier that Man Utd don't buy big is bizarre.

Maddison is a really good player.

He offers far more than Mount.

Watching his interview here, he seems to have matured a bit and doesn’t seem as big a tit as he used to be.

I wouldn’t mind him playing for us but in our 4-3-3, I’m not sure where he’d fit.

Was just going to post that. He is excellent and he doesn't seem like a bad fella. He seems like he enjoyed himself and behaved like a young lad with lots of cash a few years ago and lived it up, but he comes across quite well now.

Coming to a club like Liverpool, you have to believe in yourself. He backs himself all day every day and we need that right now.

Not sure if he has a relegation release clause because if not or if they stay up, he will go for a lot.

One for the shitness of modern football thread, if it happens. With tempered expectations and without the toxicity experienced at Everton, Rafa could probably still do a job at the right club; the fact that Forest would already sack Steve Cooper shows that they’re anything but the right club.

He's been awful this season. Absolutely woeful.

Forest gone completely Fulham from a few years back. Buying a gazilion players and fucking everything up. Going to take a long time to recover from.

You come into the PL you concentrate on your defence first. If you’re hard to score against you’ve got half a chance. And avoid vanity purchases - see Lingard.

Maddison is a number 10 in a world were number 10s no longer work. He certainly doesn't work, Ronaldo presses more than him.

He's a better option than Mount as far as England selections go. I don't see what Mount even brings to the national team. Bang average player.

Mount works harder, is more tactically aware and is generally a better player. Maddison is a player we would have 100% signed in the 90s, Utd would have signed Mount.

We don't play with a number 10, and already have about three in the squad that we have to pretend are inside forwards or central midfielders.

Yeah, it’s not great for Jones, Elliott and Carvalho. Definite square pegs for us, notwithstanding their talents.

And it'll only get worse as the more senior midfielders get older and slower.

It doesn't feel like we have a plan re the midfield.
