Goalscoring, do we have a problem on our hands?

We’ve always been wasteful, even with Mane, Firmino and Salah at their best we missed loads of chances, but we made so many that it was often more than enough to see off most teams. That isn’t the case now though.

Yeah it's exactly this really. Hasn't helped that Darwin has been so stop start with one thing and another.

Why? It is what they do.

Increase the conversion rate - Saurez then Salah both have.

Fingers crossed we can increase their conversion rate though I'm not sure whether we will, Salah's has been trending downwards since his first two seasons (47% in PL) but the sheer number of chances we were creating meant he was still scoring goals.

You take the dual threat of goals and chance creation away from the front three (Mane, Salah and Firmino) coupled with the assists of Robertson and Trent and start adding players who are more focused on one or the other and you give yourself a lot of work to bring those players up to scratch on either goals or chance creation.

Something else to interpret is that Darwin, Gakpo and Diaz all significantly outscored their xG before we signed them. So some of the goal tallies they were putting up at their previous clubs may have been a bit of fools gold. And interestingly, as soon as we signed them, they started shooting a shit load, and from everywhere. Like a staggering amount of shots. Gakpo had like 7 yesterday and some from random locations. Darwin is shooting at a crazy rate. Diaz was as well, but starting from wider, so a bit less in total.

It's like we sign these players and then maybe tell them to shoot so much to try to offset the previous overperformance with the law of averages. Meanwhile, Salah's shots are down. Weird.

It's worth keeping an eye on Benfica, their spread of goals this season to last is far far higher, last season did they suffer from the Ronaldo (the shit one) effect where they were so focused on providing one player chances to the detriment of the team.

Ronaldo was considered a 'success' because he scored 20 odd goals last season (season before?) but as a result the numbers for the rest of the forwards fell off a cliff. Similarly Benfica struggled to get anyone other than Nunez into double figures last year (managed 2 on 10 goals) but have three at around the half way point of the season this year and could end up with more.

We spent years trying to make the players create high quality chances. I think the lack of confidence in the side as a whole makes loads of them take all kinds of risks they wouldn't normally, that kind of win it on my own mentality. It's obvious with the forwards, but Trent for example has been trying way too many Hollywood passes. He gave away the ball yesterday twice, completely unpressured, because he was trying to force the play, playing really unexpected passes when easy passes to open chelsea up were on. The bad form is creating all kinds of bad decision making all over the team. There's rightly been a lot made of us being more competitive the last 2 games. But we also need to find a way of making some of these players a little calmer in the hope it will improve their decision making.

There are so many basic things we can improve on all over the pitch, when you start getting some of them right, it make it much easier to defend and attack better.

I think Darwin could eventually be just a cog in a well functioning system, where he's finishing quick transitions and after we win the ball high, because he looks like he's got the desire and the physical qualities. But he'll definitely have to become a better presser and decision maker.

And we can't just hit it long to him and have him shoot from 30 yards. There's too much of that.

I was just thinking today about our different goalscorers this season.

Alexander-Arnold

Bradley

van Dijk

Quansah

Robertson

Endo

Szoboszlai

Mac Allister

Jones

Elliott

Gravenberch

Diaz

Nuñez

Salah

Gakpo

Jota

16 different goalscorers (unless I'm missing anyone). By the end of January.

We're fucking great.
