The Americans

Another TV thread.

It started back in January and there have only been 9 episodes, but, I think it's outstanding. Really outstanding. It is the best new show I have seen in over two years.

It's written by a former CIA operative and it's about two KGB agents who have been deep cover in America for 20 years, as part of their cover they've had to be married and start a family. It's based in the 80s and begins shortly after Reagan assumes the presidency and with it escalates the tensions during the cold war; so far it's been a perfect blend of drama and action. There's some very interesting espionage at work, watching how they cultivate assets is fascinating.

The acting is top notch, too. They're both going to get awards, I am certain of it. This is the female lead:

This is mentioned in another thread.

But yes it shits on all news series I have seen since Mad Men started. It dumps all over Homeland.

It is the right mix of character, action and drama.

I am glad it got renewed for a second series.

And yes the female lead gives me hot flushes

I love this show too.

I find the lady above very pretty but nothing more. Looks a bit tomboyish and I like women with a bit more meat on their bones, and I dont mean fake tits.

Programme is ace though and takes a big dump on homeland.

I think where it distinguishes itself from Homeland is that you can clearly see the long-term plotting at work. This could easily go on for 5/6 seasons.

I agree and there would be no big loss if they changed the focus of the programme onto another 'family' or group of people. Lots of room for development and hardly a far fetched scene in the series up til now.

Have to say that I didn't watch a few episodes and then watched the ones I missed one after the other. It worked in the fact I enjoyed the show more.Though it still seems a mishmash of the 60s/70s spyshows.Overall it has the legs to last for years and its good as a filler program as it requires no brainwork.

It does have a major flaw for me in the fact its set in the 80s but the whole feel and look to the show feels like the 50s or 60s.

If I wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally stream this does anyone have any links I should avoid?

Been watching latest stuff through xbmc and on icestream and various other add ons.

This xbmc thing is the dogs even with an old laptop like mine.

Not short of adult content too,if you like that sort of thing too.

Granted I am not a well trained international assassin, but surely, if you're cultivating an asset, it's a bad idea to let her fall in love with you? She'll keep pushing for more and more, like living together or meeting your colleagues etc, which you can't give her. Eventually she would figure out the truth and your cover is fucked. Just me?

And what was that about with Elizabeth - who was outstanding in that last episode - and Granny in the car at the end? I also don't really get why she let the CIA director live?

Another fine episode and a supreme ending. You know you're watching a great show when the prospect of a season finale has you excited at what might happen and, concurrently, pissed off that you don't get to watch it again until next year.

Glad I read this thread and started watching this. Great telly with some wonderfully uncomfortable moments and I can't wait for the last episode now.

I particularly liked the scene in the motel room when Stan went to see Phillip after Amador had died. I was just cringing inside, it was awful.

It's got a bit of everything - it's even got Johnboy Walton, for fuck's sake; what more could you want?

Any predictions for the season finale? I really can't see too much going down although there'll always be something a bit random. For example, I don't see any 'major' character dying in this one.

Not safe for forum runner twats.

Martha has always struck me as an endangered species because of how damaging she potentially is. They've got to set up next season, so I think we'll have Stan get another clue about them. Something to increase his suspicion, but nothing definitive; I'm thinking along the lines of an ankle injury consistent with a police report. I'm still trying to get my head around the last episode, to be honest. Has she been working him since the very beginning?
