The thing with Gerrard is that he's still got a lot to offer if used sparingly. Ferguson didn't deploy witchcraft for Giggs and Scholes to remain pivotal players at an advanced age; they just weren't automatic starters.

We didn't have our focal point at the start of last season either when we were picking up wins, but we did have him the one before when we weren't.
