It’s not pointless for the two teams involved, though.

Yes I agree, it wouldn't be the World Cup otherwise, even though some teams are not up to much but deserve to be there by qualifying through their groups they can create some great moments, Morocco for instance, plus there isn't really many mugs in the competition these days and can produce some entertaining football on their day.

I cant believe Sweden v Switzerland is a knockout game in the World Cup

The fucking state of these two.

England and Colombia are playing for a place in the semi-final.

[Edit]

Just seen El Rojo's comment.

Good lad, El Rojo.  I like the way he thinks.

Sweden started really well, but obviously lack a decent striker. They scored a fortunate goal in a scrappy second  half. But their excellent defensive organisation and work rate won it for them.

Not a great side, especially for the World Cup quarter finals, but certainly no pushovers...

The shit game everyone expected between these two, decided by a shit deflected strike.

I don't know what their forwards are being instructed to do, but not one of them has a striker's instinct to get in the box and see if they can get on the end of something. Every time the Swiss had a decent crossing position, the 'strikers' were hiding behind a defender or just hanging back instead of attacking the ball. They're all 'link up' types who 'can get a goal', which means they'll be lucky to get into double figures over the course of a season with a fair wind. It ends up with Shaqiri or Xhaka trying to score a worldy from outside the box.

The Swedes did what they always do, making it all about defensive organisation and work rate. Not much to add to that.

Olsson was through on goal at the end there, and it was obvious he was looking for contact rather than trying to get an attempt on goal. Whenever we've played Swansea in recent years, he's always been one of those players who looks to draw a foul first before thinking of what he can do with the ball. No surprise he hit the deck.
