I worked in the computer industry for twenty years and even though I've quit' date=' I develop my own version of Android for my tablets in my spare time, but I reckon Uncle Meat is going to win the computer geek prize hands down.[/quote']

I reckon Uncle Meat is a real contender, but you've got to factor in he makes his living from being a nerd. Some of the amateur ones may overtake him.

What's this stuff you're on about Lee, do you ever dress up and re-enact shit or just play it on a table with other nerds?

I don't know what my worse nerd thing is. Does watching the complete series of Buffy the vampire slayer about 6 times make me a nerd?

I'm obsessed with the stylistic use of punctuation, have collected literally thousands of both records and comics and spend hours every day reading for pleasure. I don't consider any of those things nerdy, but I'm sure many do.

Some of the nerdiest nerds I've met are female, probably because they feel like they have a lot to prove in the computer world.

That's a different thing. That's women trying/having to be better than men to demonstrate their competence in a male dominated work environment. If that nerdi-ness extends into their personal life I accept my error

No, these were out and out nerds to the core, even down to the geeky glasses. They made that lass in the Big Bang Theory look cool.

Hmmm...

Big World of Warcraft fan... books, comics, the game... wearing a WoW Tauren T-shirt in work right now...

Can program to a professional level in C#, C++ and Java...

I'm not as nerdy as I used to be but most of the time I'd still rather sit in playing computer games being a magical cow who can cast lightning bolts than go out and you know... socialise.

Love comics, cartoons and other shit I allegedly should have grown out of.

At what stage do you become classed as a nerd though?

Used to work in IT and Electronics related stuff, have a degree in Physics and still watch OU stuff and anything Physics related I can even though I don't actually use any of it in real life much now. I play console/computer games a lot. Can programme to a small extent (it's been awhile so I am a bit rusty and out of date with it now) and have very, very good knowledge of HTML, Perl, Java, asp etc.

It has been suggested in motorsport circles that I am an anorak as my knowledge going back a lot of years is fairly in depth and obscure. Particularly with the Ford, Vauxhall/Opel, Talbot, BMC and Audi teams to the point I can decode Ford chassis numbers without looking them up. That said it's highly useful for my self employed stuff because if people know you know your shit it helps big style because they know you are churning out good stuff and doing it right. Or as it has been put to me "people know you're a fanny" which I believe is actually meant to be a compliment for the fact my bits are made properly.

I am also probably the acknowledged expert on Ford Motorsport Transit vans, OK that bit I'm a bit ashamed of but I do have a very nice ex Ford Motorsport Transit with a V6 in it which I am very proud of as it is lovely and it took a lot of work to get where it is (it's still not finished).

If I get bored later I might add some pics to the "I am man hear me roar" thread from the rebuild on it.

Depends on whether I get the 1989 Scirocco GT-II I've just bought up and running today or not.

I make a living (sort of) from computers, but it's more a labour of love than a living, which is why I'll never be rich from it... I'll happily play, tweak and otherwise fiddle with them for free.

Domestic PCs are just the tip of the iceberg, here in my workshop is half of my vintage collection which includes an Amiga 2000, A1200, A600, A500, A500+ along with 1081 and 1084S monitors. I drove to Bristol to get the 1084. Also a Dragon 32, 2 Electrons, a BBC B, Acorn RiscPC and a Commodore PET. I've got more at home, these are just the ones I keep here and play with inbetween jobs. I'll never make money from that lot, but I just love 'em sooooo much. Also got a shitload of brochures, old copies of Byte magazine and various other age-related gubbins.

I've got a shitload of Scientology books, tools and literature here too, including a Mk V E-meter. It's all a load of bollocks, but seriously fascinating. Should Tom Cruise ever visit mid wales, I've got his auditing needs covered.

I've also got an amateur radio licence, and I homebrew my own equipment. I can happily spend hours with my radio stuff, running around the bottom field hanging wires up from here, there and everywhere and then checking for resonance and performace is a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon.

I've got my car sorted for mobile radio ops too, boxes of wires and odds n sods in the boot so I can lash up temporary antennas if I get the urge as well as the car mounted stuff. I keep £500 worth of Icom radio underneath the passenger seat for when I get those "I fancy listening to a group of old farts talking about gardening on 3.690Mhz LSB whilst" whilst driving. I hardly use the radio for actual voice communication, data modes mostly (poniez via slow scan TV last week, for example..) or just listening to all those swooshy noises you get on the short wave bands.

Finally, sci-fi books, comics and cartoons. Lots of, all well thumbed or watched.

*deep breath*

I seriously need to get out more...

You've got a missus, so you've successfully achieved the nerdy life *and* got your dick wet. For some people, both are mutually exclusive.

Living the dream!

Haha. And that's the difference between an aspergers-esque socially inadequate neckbeard nerd and a generally friendly and sociable, if a bit hairy and hippyish, nerd.
