Acessing news groups

I have never really used newsgroups.

 

What kind of reader do you need?

 

Are they all subscription or are there any free ones?

Sabnzbd is a great reader. It's free and works well with sickbeard and couchpotato.

 

You'll need to pay for a service provider although there are a load of free trials you can try first.

I used to use Sabnzbd and Astraweb but that was 3 years ago when a lot of stuff was getting taken down. Now with Kodi it's no longer value for money.

Yeah Astraweb went to shit years ago with loads of takedowns. There are better ones out there.

 

You also need an indexer to actually find what you are looking for. No idea if there are any decent open free ones. Most are invite only and fairly limited unless you pay for VIP. Usenet works much better when it's all automated with the likes of sickbeard and everything downloads in the quality you want as soon as it is released.

They're ridiculously fast but more hassle than they're worth for the most part, IMO.

 

They have some advantages over a decent torrent tracker, such as no need to seed. But for me, they fell by the wayside.

I much prefer Newsgroups & NZBs.

Some of the sites referenced in the thread are no longer, like Merlin's Portal, for example.

 

I use AltBinz as my news reader, IZArc to unzip files & Quick Par if I need to repair any damaged files. 

 

I'm signed up to GingaDaddy and use TweakNews as my usenet provider (thanks cloggy).

 

I currently have 23 invites available. They like a small donation for site upkeep and this will give you VIP status for a good while, 10 years according to my profile...
