  1. Was in same ITU as me in Royal Hallamshire. Tony Bland next to me, and Andrew a few beds along. I have no memory of it obviously as I was in a coma. Rest easy Andrew. How I survived fuck knows. Very sad day. Again. another one.

  2. People looked at me differently and they knew I was with somebody. At thirteen, I was making more money than most of the grown-ups in the neighborhood. I mean, I had more money than I could spend. I had it all. One day the kids from the neighborhood carried my mother's groceries all the way home. You know why? It was because I wasn't a Star Wars virgin.

  10. Should we not wait until the end of August before drawing conclusions that it is a shit window. No problem with us playing the poor mouth if it means clubs don't think we have loads of cash and no problem clearing the deadwood if it brings in a lad like Bellingham or Gravenberch at the end of the window. I don't like FSG but they aren't daft. We are a cash cow for them, so it makes no sense them running us into the ground for 2-3 years because even Jurgen can't keep turning water into wine. It also makes sense to let some of the lads we might bring in have a few years under Jurgen before he goes in 2024. It does feel we have a team at their peak, but probably in 12 months, they will be on the decline because a lot of them are approaching 30 and injuries will kick in more. Fresh players will help in that regard and might give them longetivity. I can't help but feel that injuries are the one thing that will derail a title bid this season, even if it is unlikely to be even close to what last season was. A bit of a classic United window. A brilliant defender with a few injury problems on gigantic money and a terrific talent who is still some way short of being world class. Not knocking it because it strengthens them, but there doesn't seem to be a natural hierarcy there, more a "he looks good buy him" policy with a lot of fellas on incredible money. A bad start and they could unravel. Ole isn't an alpha male type who can control so many big egos. He's a league 1 manager. I would expect 3 first team quality players to come in. Right now, we have signed one and we have lost one in Gini. Two more to come in and I'd be delighted. A bit concerned we are probably letting Shaq go as he is a very good player and is a game changer which is something we don't really have outside our best 13 or 14 players. It's a brilliant 13/14 player squad with a few lads of real promise like Jones, Elliot and Kelleher who look good enough for this level, but who will make mistakes and have their bad days. Jones I suppose is ahead of the curve there and should get a lot of minutes next season. No point relying on Ox or Keita. I'll say it again if we get twenty games out of Matip, we can win the league. As I said, I would give it a few weeks before ripping into FSG and I'm no defender of them. A lot is said about recent windows, but the one last summer was very good on paper - Thiago (a superstar at Bayern), Jota (exciting pl player) and Tsimikas (cover with good experience). The previous window we took a punt on Minamino which may yet come off, but at least should cover our outlay. This summer we signed Konate who seems to be a great talent.

  18. Terrible and tragic news. The very least the club can now do would be to change the embroidery on the back of every new shirt, to the number 97, and as a priority they must add Andrew's name to The Eternal Flame memorial. Rest in Peace Andrew Devine JFT97

  21. Tony’s spot on. Probably more nostalgia for the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s films, simply as a lot of us grew up with them as kids (obviously not Stringers) More discussion as a result as people feel more connected to them. I don’t personally feel the same for films that have come out in the last 10 odd years but I’m grateful for another tournament all the same. Well in Stig for taking the time to organise another tournament. Most of us appreciate it.

  22. I have seen this many times. They are in a pub and order some drinks. While the bar person has to sit by the till and thus not able to serve anyone else they fart about with the food order. I'll have that, ooh no I won't. What do you want? Oh what does thingy want? Go over and ask her. This process would take a few blokes a couple of minutes by simply looking at the menu prior to approaching the bar. This is an utter incomprehensible task for them. Just hope no one else is thirsty or hungry.

  24. I'm a believer now, I've figured out all you need to do is just read things that confirm your bias, such as... 'It forecasts that UK GDP will rise by 7.2% in 2021, the fastest growth since 1941, after a 9.8% contraction in 2020 – the worst in almost 300 years. That would outpace other advanced economies, including the US. Back in March, the OECD had forecast UK growth of 5.1% this year. For 2022, growth has been revised significantly higher, too – to 5.5%, from 4.7% three months ago.' And then largely ignore anything that goes against that, such as... 'However, the OECD also warns that the UK could suffer more longer-term economic damage than other G7 industrialised nations, with the impact of leaving the EU adding to the disruption of the pandemic. The OECD examined how much potential output has been lost because of the coronavirus crisis, by comparing the latest projections for national income levels in 2025 with pre-pandemic forecasts. It found that Japan, Canada and the US will only suffer limited scarring, with the US economy expected to be larger than previously forecast in four years’ time because of massive government stimulus. However, major eurozone members could experience a 0.3% annual decline in potential economic output, while the UK’s growth rate could be 0.5% a year lower than previously expected. The OECD said this was partly down to the impact of leaving the EU, as well as Covid-19. “The United Kingdom could suffer the biggest reduction among G7 countries (a decline of 0.5 percentage point per annum), in part reflecting the additional adverse supply-side effects from 2021 following Brexit.”' I have found great comfort in ignoring the negatives contained within the same article(s), really helps me to cope with the facts of the matter. Glory be to Brexitania!

  25. Star Wars is a 10/10 portrayal of the hero's journey that establishes and delivers through a fantastical new world brilliantly, technically one of the most influential productions ever. Also one of the best opening scenes in history. That said I went for Casablanca.

  26. Paul O’Donovan expects mum to be ‘annoyed’ despite winning gold for Ireland O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won the lightweight double sculls in Tokyo to claim their country’s first Olympic gold medal since 2012. Olympic champion Paul O’Donovan expects to receive the wrath of his mother when he returns to Ireland with his gold medal. O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won a thrilling lightweight double sculls final in Tokyo on Thursday to claim their country’s first Olympic gold medal since 2012. The pair became the first male Irish gold medallists since boxer Michael Carruth in 1992 after beating Germany by just 0.86 seconds at the Sea Forest Waterway on Thursday. But 27-year-old O’Donovan admits that achievement may not be enough to earn the plaudits when he returns home to see his mum. “I’ve been ignoring her all the while so she’s going to be fairly annoyed, when I get home I’ll get a back of the hand across the face I’d say,” he told RTE. O’Donovan also became the first Irish athlete to win Olympic gold and silver medals, having finished second in the double sculls with brother Gary in Rio. Talking about winning at his sport’s biggest event, a jovial O’Donovan added: “I suppose it’s fine. “We are just trying to do the best we can and hopefully be the best of the rest of them. “That’s the race plan we had, we do it all the time and it seems to work OK for us. Italy and Germany always go hard, you can count on that, and then slow down a bit. “Once we were catching up to them we knew we were at a sustainable pace and kept going. “Winning today and a silver medal last time, I’ll be a bit happier about that. The silver medal is nice but Fintan did the right job and we went straight to the top at his first Games.” McCarthy added: “I’ve been chilled out, usually I’d be a bit more nervous but felt really prepared. The expectation doesn’t weigh too heavily on us, we do what we always do – the best we can.” The duo had set a new Olympic best in the semi-final of six minutes and 05.33 seconds but had to fight for gold. Germans Jonathan Rommelmann and Jason Osborne were 10 lengths clear after 500m but Ireland slowly closed the gap and managed to edge ahead and were a length in front before the finish line.

  29. I’ve gone for Goodfellas as this is the film I enjoyed the most, the first time I watched it. Casablanca is a masterpiece and deserves more votes than it will get here. Star Wars belongs nowhere near a ‘greatest films’ final. Particularly when it’s in representing the 1970’s, a decade that produced any number of superior films.

  34. The transfer grim reaper James Pearce will probably shoot that one down later.... Contrary to claims by a random Scotsman in a supermarket, the Athletic understands that Liverpool won't be signing players for £39m and £90m respectively and there are currently no plans to sign anybody.

  36. I'm not sure you read that correctly- blood clot incidence is higher in unvaccinated patients who've had Covid than those who've been vaccinated. Also, the AZ and Pfizer vaccines are both about the same, which is tragic as a lot of governments cast unwarranted shade on the AZ one, leading to low take up in some countries.

  43. We’re away at some Youth Hostel in the Lakes. A beautiful place ruined by the middle classes, but that’s another story. Went out last night. Lovely meal but it was a bit of a hassle getting booked in somewhere so decided to stop in and just have one of their pizzas and a beer. I went down and ordered them for 7pm which gave the wife a good 90 mins to have a rest, get ready and make the 30 second commute downstairs. Despite my 30 min, 15 min and 10 min reminders she wasn’t ready so I went down on my own. The pizzas were delivered bang on 7pm. She got downstairs at 7.15pm, took a bite and immediately complained her pizza was cold.
