Goalkeeper Jose Reina has admitted Liverpool may have to lower their targets for next season following the uncertainty at Anfield.

 

The Reds will compete in the Europa League next season after finishing a lowly seventh in the Premier League table this term.

 

Meanwhile, the club has been put up for sale by American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett and so are unlikely to spend big in the summer transfer market.

 

The club's hierarchy and manager Rafael Benitez have vowed to retain their star players like Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, but keeper Reina has offered a downbeat assessment of their targets for the new season.

 

Reina was speaking from Spain's training camp ahead of the World Cup finals.

 

"As long as we build a competitive squad we do not have to fear anybody," he said.

 

"But it is looking like we will not yet. We have to be less optimistic than the last few years and get ready for setting another kind of target.

 

"(The owners) have to move quickly and anything that happens has to be right now."

well in pepe! he even stated that hick and gillette should go asap! surley all players past and present espically carragher gerrard, mascherano, torress should be saying the same thing.

I hate saying this but what about King Kenny, aldrigde, barnes etc st john is normally vocal about managers and last but not least were are all our superstar fans were if the said things about Hicks and gillette the press would print it.

 

All players past and present and anyone who has any clout in the public eye should follow pepe's lead!

Pepe Reina should be captain of this club. He really should. I love Stevie and Jamie. But Stevie isn't the kind of leader we need and Jamie's game is going downhill.

 

Pepe is a fucking stellar performer, a fantastic personality and he isn't afraid to say what needs to be said.

 

Get the armband on him.

'I thought it was a good move from Mr Moores,' Reina said in the Liverpool Echo. 'Of course I’m worried about the situation with the club. We need the sale to happen quickly.

'We have to be optimistic but anything that’s going to happen has to be right now.'

Honestly he doesn't need the armband - any more than carragher or hyppia, he's a fucking top pro with a love and respect for the people who pay his wages. Maybe he can "lower expectations" a little without as much grief as his gaffer, who splits the fans. With the pressure off and a bit of good fortune we could have an absolutely fucking superb season coming up - equally it could be dull as fuck, anywhere near the level of this season and there'll be mass dives from Runcorn Bridge.
