Yeah, like Rafas playing experience in Spanish 2nd division, Klopps playing career, Wengers, Moaninhos, helped them go on to be one of best managers around at one point or another. It's almost like you don't have to be top of your profession to become a coach in it. I don't know much of Achterberg as a coach, he might be good, he might be shit. But to use his playing career for a sly (sarcastic)dig is cheap. Here's the goalkeeping coaches at both Mancs, Arse and Chelsea.

City. Xabier Mancisidor. RCD Mallorca Spanish 2nd division, relegated to 3rd Div with him in goal.

Chelsea. gianluca spinelli, never played professionally.

Utd. Emilio Alvarez. Spent most of his career in Spanish 2nd, never played in top league.

Arsenal. Gerry Peytin. Decent career in England, spent majority of it outside of the Top league

In all your examples those managers built themselves up gradually in previous coaching roles to prove that they could take a good job at a top club.

Where the fuck has that useless cunt achterberg done that?

Gerry Peyton was a decent keeper,I remember him at maybe Fulham in particular but also played for Everton,Burnley and Birmingham among others. He was also an Irish international for over a decade too. He was a very decent keeper.

It's not important whether or not a goalkeeping coach has played top flight football and been known as one of the better goalkeepers. What matters is that as a coach, the goalkeepers are improving under his watch. As has been pointed out, our goalkeepers have either stagnated or gone backwards under Achterberg. The defensive shape and solidity in front of the goalkeeper plays a part of course, and the player himself can find sporadic spells of good form, but if the overall issues haven't changed then you have to question the effectiveness of the coaching.

Very much agree with this.

I will also add that although goalkeeping coaching is a great idea, often goalkeeping coaches know as little about coaching outfield players as most coaches know about coaching goalkeepers and I think this can be a big problem.

Strange defence but it got the job done, so now others can come in a bit fresher. Rested Mane too. He’s managing the squad quite well at the minute. It’s a very minor gripe, but I’d like to see more of Grujic. He’s too good for the U23 side but he’s not really getting a look in at senior level. I thought we’d see him a bit more this season, especially in games like today. If he plays a bit more and proves to not quite be the level we need, fair enough. But we need to find out. It’s not like the other midfielders are all world class.

Commentator mentioned something about Grujic looking to go out on loan for game time. I dont agree with this myself.

Gino didn't look too comfortable and put the rest of the back 3 and Mig under a bit of pressure on several occasions with sloppy cross field passes. Much better in midfield.

Robertson did ok but, for me, didn't seem to know where to position himself. Never quite high enough up the pitch when we had the ball in good places and not close enough to Gino on the odd occasion we needed him to be. Improved as the game went on.

We got away with it yesterday largely because they were unambitious and not very good

And step up Adam Philllips. With all those Echo articles about that lad, he sounds twice the player that Roberto Carlos was in his prime.

I thought the lad was plenty high up enough yesterday for much of the game, and he found loads of space, he just wasn't utilised very often.  There were at least a dozen occasions where passing the ball to him in space was the best option available and it didn't get there.

I thought Robertson did OK. He put a couple of good crosses in and showed a decent turn of pace and always showed for the ball. Wijnaldum looked out of sorts, which would put anyone off. He tried a couple of turns into trouble, then passed it back to Mingo with too much on it a few times, and the cross field passing was too risky. Also, he looked like he was slipping a lot on the surface - maybe Brighton watered the pitch too much to try to give themselves a bit more of a chance?

Anyway, it’s not a defence I want to see again, but it worked and we had plenty to spare to accommodate this defence while others got some rest. Fair play to the manager.
