  1. The easy thing to say here is that the damage was done in the first leg. Obviously it was, but that’s not what I want to hear today as I feel like it’s excusing the clueless, lifeless and gutless second half we saw here. This tie was not over after last week. It certainly wasn’t over when we pulled a goal back within seven minutes and I don’t think any of us thought it was over when we went in at half time with a one goal lead, primed for a second half charge. So to just say now “yeah the damage was done last week” feels like it’s excusing the inexcusable. We had a chance to still turn this around and had we got a second goal Atalanta would probably have folded under the pressure. So that second half was inexcusable, because I don’t think we even mustered a serious shot did we? Atalanta out-thought us and they out-fought us, and their defence and goalkeeper have probably not had an easier 45 minutes all season because of the job their midfield and forwards did in stopping us playing. They were terrific, I’m taking nothing away from them. Fully deserved winners and they did an absolute number on us in both games. That said, we made it incredibly easy for them last night because that was one of the least intelligent halves of football I have ever seen from any Liverpool side. Ever. We can talk about the poor form and lack of quality too if you like, but the thing that was jumping out at me in that second half was that this team is utterly reliant on having Klopp and Lijnders hold their hand through games and solve problems for them, and when they don’t have that they can look utterly lost. I’ve been saying it for a while now, usually because they’re shite in the first half and only start playing when Klopp tells them what to do at half time. There’s nobody on the pitch capable of sorting these problems. That second half has shaken me far more than anything else I’ve seen from us all season. Far worse than the United debacles or the loss to Palace. Worse than last Thursday at Anfield too, which you could maybe *maybe* put down to an off night caused by Atalanta’s unusual tactics that we’re not used to facing. We knew exactly what we were facing this time though and in the first half we clearly had a plan to try and cause them different types of problems than we did last week. The movement was fluid, players were popping up in areas we’re not used to seeing them and although it wasn’t great, you could see we were trying to do something different. It was alright and it felt like we were building up some momentum ahead of a second half push.

  2. Urgh. What a sickening weekend. Literally in my case, I missed the Palace game after being up all night spewing and shitting. I maybe could have made the game but I was worried about shitting myself. Maybe some of the players should have been as cautious as me and stayed away too. It wasn’t just our players shitting all over themselves though, Arsenal’s did too. I’ll get to them in a bit. The early game on Saturday saw Spurs get their pants pulled down at Newcastle. 4-0 flattered them in the end, they were woeful and their high line got utterly dismantled. It amazes me this doesn’t happen to them all the time, Same with Villa. I watch them defend and think they should concede three, four, five a game yet they hardly ever do. They could have actually scored first in this game which might have seen it go in a completely different direction. The stands at St James’ Park are really fucking high but the fans at the back of the Gallowgate still had to take cover from Timo Werner’s volley. The German Stuart Barlow. I’ll take all of this back if he helps them beat City, but the more likely scenario is that we let him sink us at Anfield. The first goal is pathetic. Spurs looked like they were dealing with the counter but then Udogie meekly lost out to Gordon and then van de Ven just fell over and allowed Isak to score. The second goal is even worse. Romero’s blind pack pass went straight to Gordon, who cut inside and once again van de Ven just inexplicably fell over and allowed him to score. Van de Ven looked like he was playing in his bare feet on an ice rink as he couldn’t stand up. Goal number three is him again, this time he’s trying to play offside against Isak. In the Newcastle half!! Isak ran clear and finished with ease, as he tends to do in those situations. He doesn’t miss many. Goal number four was a Schar header from a corner. Spurs have fucked fourth now haven’t they? Especially when you look at their fixture list. We need the pricks to be up for it when they play City but at this rate they’ll have nothing to play for then. And if Arsenal are still in the title race then we can forget about Spurs doing anything against City as they’ll be rolling out the red carpet for Guardiola. Not that we even have any right to complain, we can’t help ourselves so it’s bit rich to moaning about others potentially not helping us.

  3. ‘We are treating more adults than ever in NHS mental health’ Yeah, unpick that and ask why? Years of struggle, stigma and demonisation through you and the compliant media. Reducing ‘illness’ to an homogeneous whole so you can posture on a ‘hard work pays off’ platform while you benefit more than anyone from ‘benefits’ of government largess. Tax loopholes, write downs, front end investment, all ‘benefits’ this government doesn’t seem to have a problem with and they cost far, far, far fucking more than some broken people whose lives are utterly fucking miserable due to policies, actions and words of you and your fucking ilk, you rancid, vapid, vicious, little shit imp. Fuck off.

  6. Excuse me while I wipe a tear from my eye having listened to the last bit of this episode in which the lads reflected on Klopp's European era. Beautiful sentiments from Chris and the perfect summation from Dave - It's been the most fun he, and many of us, have had watching Liverpool, ever. Shame John B had to ruin it all by banging on about the Nazis ;) In all seriousness, I was fortunate enough to be at most of the big European games under Klopp, home and away, and it's almost impossible to describe how special they were - Dortmund, City, Roma, Barcelona, Spurs in Madrid and even Kyiv; occasions that will live with me forever and which we should all be grateful for. Fans of practically every other club would kill for just one of those nights; we had loads, and the glorious memories will last long after the increasing pain of this season has passed. If, like the lads, I had to pick my favourite European goal under Klopp, it would probably be Divock's in Madrid. I was right behind the goal where he smashed the ball past Hugo Lloris and will never forget the feeling of knowing that we had definitely won a sixth European Cup. That I was surrounded by mates and celebrated with each and every one of them only added to the magic. The following morning it was back home via Alicante and I'm pretty sure I didn't stop smiling for the entire journey - and for the rest of that summer. Thank you Jurgen. It's been one hell of a ride. 7. Work-rate. Incisiveness. Nous. I don't ask for much. This is how it's gonna be. Build from the ground up. So now we focus only on the league, not only needing to make sure that we take care of our business, but also hoping the other two contenders shit down their own leg at some point. All 3 have made a right bollock-up of their European quarter finals. Our failure was the disaster at home to Atalanta. City did not put Real Madrid to bed at the Emptyhad. Arsenal showed 'inexperience' against one of the weakest-looking Bayern sides in recent memory. The first is entirely on us. The second is another example of an Ancelotti side being on the ropes but getting the rub of the green at the crucial time. The last is just making excuses to justify yet another European campaign for Arsenal ending on a damp squib. Taking care of our business starts with making sure we take all the points at Fulham. We didn't manage to do that on the opening day of last season. Fulham had just returned to the top flight, and had also been shorn of one of their key players in the previous campaign when Fabio Carvalho joined us. That deal had basically been agreed the previous January, but Fulham couldn't get a replacement across the line so late in the transfer window so the Portuguese stayed put, and continued to look like a player that might really impress in the top flight. They still had Mitrovic up front though, and he had been a true goal machine in the Championship. He continued that form in this game, proving to be a real handful all match. He opened the scoring with a towering far post header having outjumped Trent, and got a second via the penalty spot after the softest of fouls by Virg. In between, Darwin got us an equaliser following a nice move, when Big Game James' pass around the corner got Mo into space down the right. His cross was met by Darwin at the near post with a 'trademark Usher finish' (his words, quite literally, as I'm certain he said as much in his match write-up!). Following Mitrovic's penalty, we were chasing an equaliser again, and found it late on when a ball over the top was contested by Mo and a defender. The defender could only flick it to Darwin who mis-controlled the ball perfectly for Mo to fire home the loose ball. Both sides had hit the woodwork in this game already, and we did so near the death when Hendo fired a 30-yarder onto the bar after Harvey played the ball out to him. 2-2 it finished. Dropping points to a newly-promoted team was not an ideal start to the season, and it wouldn't be until our 4th league game of the season that we would register a victory. Fulham are a difficult side to call. They can look awful and really be got at in some games, and in others they are a real handful. We've had 3 tough games against them already this season, and Craven Cottage is a ground Jurgen has yet to win at. It's not like the days under Rodgers and Kenny when the likes of Sturridge and Maxi were netting hat-tricks. Earlier in the season they were struggling to replace Mitrovic's goals (he'd take the mercenary route and grabbed the Saudi oil money), and players like Jimenez and Muniz weren't looking like the answer. Muniz has slowly settled in, and behind him they have players like Wilson, Willian and DeCordova-Reid who all have an eye for goal. What we badly need at the moment is a return of our ruthless streak, alongside the ability to create something from open play. We need our players to play with tempo, and when we get bodies forward and in numbers, we need to start making the right decisions and be precise and composed at the critical moment. Everyone that was available for the Atalanta game should be available for this one. I would seriously consider putting Mo on the bench, with the idea of using him when the Fulham defence begin to tire later on. In recent weeks, he hasn't been able to make much headway when up against defenders who still have enough gas in the tank. The penalties make his stats look OK but the eye test tells a different story. He's still more than capable of making a telling contribution. We just need to put him in when the conditions are right to make hay with what he can bring. We play this game after City and Arsenal have played their games so we'll either be playing catch-up or have the opportunity to make a real dent in their aspirations. The focus should be each game though, not the bigger picture. Maximum motivation, concentration, attitude and application from first minute to last. 3 points please. Get it done!

  8. The Reds bowed out of Europe with barely a whimper. Technically they won on the night, but nobody was fooled by that as Atalanta out-thought and out-fought Klopp's side, who once again failed to muster a goal from open play. Chris Smith is joined by John Brennan and TLW Editor Dave Usher to briefly pick through the bones of this stinker before trying to lift the mood a little by reminiscing about some of our greatest European moments under Jurgen. 14. Ok, so we've been dumped out of the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup, and probably pissed away any chance of winning the league by drawing with United and losing to Palace, the players look utterly bereft of belief, confidence, and intelligence, and we're destroying the last few months of the reign of one of the greatest managers in the club's history, but on the plus side Xabi Alonso, who told us to get fucked, is doing well as manager in the Bundesliga.

  15. To me these two games were more Gasperini vs Klopp than it was Atalanta vs Liverpool, and Gasperini totally humiliated Klopp. If we were surprised at Anfield, and we shouldn't have been, surely we'd sort it out for the next game, No we didn't. Other than shuffle our front men around from right to left, to midfield and back up front, probably trying to disrupt their man-man defense, we really had no clue. They pressed with four players and had at least 2 more forllowing our midfielders dropping deep in the build up. That should make them vunerable at the back. Apart from a few long passes, normally from Trent, we never took advantage of what shoudl have been a risky defence plan.

  16. Definitely. I dont think Amorim is nailed on yet, but after the game I was thinking just because he knows them and is Portuguese, he might be better for Nunez, Diaz and Jota than Klopp. Total shallow analysis, but maybe it is that simple.

  17. I use that Real Madrid performance this week as the benchmark to compare us against. The ability to defend and not make dumb mistakes is key. The ability of the forwards to receive the ball at pace and under pressure and yet still beat 1 or 2 men and get on the counter is amazing. The pure energy, skill and power in midfield to adapt to any opposition and beat them in a number of different ways is essential. Across the board, we're failing in all 3 areas. So is it a coaching deficit we have, or a player deficit? In attack, it's a player deficit. The closest we have to a Vinicius Jr or Rodrygo is probably Diaz, but he's a mile off them. We don't have enough pace in wide areas and they lose too many battles. When they get near the opposition area they aren't creative thinkers, and they lack the pace to hit the byline or sell a dummy. They all want to score the same goal, from the edge of the area, and they usually don't even get that shot off. I'd gladly sell every forward bar Nunez, who I think still has the pace and power and confidence to be part of an elite team. The rest can go, for various reasons, especially the injury prone. In midfield it's also a player deficit. You look at physical specimens like Camavinga, Tchouameni, Bellingham, Valverde, and it's like they're from another planet. All at least 6 foot tall, and all are quick, strong, and have stamina. Obviously it helps that they score goals as well. Modric and Kroos are different types of player but we know their level, it's elite. Of all our midfielders, only MacAllister would get a contract at Madrid. Defenders. I think it's a problem causes by the failures in midfield and attack primarily, but also a coaching and tactical failing. We have great individual defenders, more than capable of stepping in at a team like Madrid.

  18. Yeah, I mostly agree. Trent running out of gas was equally as influential, unfortunately. First half, although it all felt rushed, all our best moments came through Trent. His long passing was on point and we were causing them issues. Unfortunately, once he went off, we lacked any real threat. The runs weren’t being made or they were to slow or the passes were to slow in coming or they were to straight… or a combination of all issues. Mac Allister was out on his feet and the substitutions didn’t really help, partially inflicted themselves, partially for the above reasons. Yesterday wasn’t a great performance, it was better. For once, we started well, scored first and kept a clean sheet. The tie was lost last week, not last night. It’s annoying because Atalanta clearly aren’t anything special, neither are Marseille… our first test should have been in the final and to not get there is really disappointing. Onwards and upwards. This scoring issue can’t go on forever, we’ve too many good players.

One side wants to remove Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and West Bank and Jerusalem. The other side wants to remove Israeli's from the map. I'm pessimistic - I don't see there ever being a compromise that satisfies both camps, not even a two-state solution. Ultimately I fear one side will use nukes to remove the other.

People are well into mental health now, people from all classes and walks of life - this bollocks only washes with white van men, and there aren't enough to build a movement on. 37. Lots of talk of Klopp's tactics being responsible for recent performances. It's not him who failed to score the dozen or so easy chances against United and Palace. These same players won't suddenly become clinical when he's not there. Last night was a tricky game against big, organised opposition. To win by 3 was always unlikely but we could have managed it by being clinical and would have been in the tie had we been clinical in the first game. I think recent results are far more on the lack of quality and intelligence of the players than on Klopp's tactics.

  43. What is your message to the Liverpool supporters? We have to change from doubter to believer. Now. What a ride it's been. Remember when the links to him started to become more concrete? I remember being in the lift in work a few days before the announcement and overheard a fella saying it was a done deal as he knew someone at the club. I cartwheeled into work! That heavy metal football at the beginning was great. Gut busting. The Press. Lallana almost passing out at Tottenham. And then putting his stamp on the team with Mane, Salah, Virgil and Allison - genuinely world class players at the top of their game. I still look back at the Roma game at home - I don't think I've ever been as excited to watch a Liverpool team as I was that night, and at 44 years old I've seen some great teams. It's all coming to an end, as everything does. I'm amazed it's lasted this long. I'm not sure I'll ever be as excited as I was when he joined. But who knows what tomorrow might bring. Thanks Jürgen.

  45. How people can blame Van Dijk or say he can do more for this goal is fucking crazy. This is the first run made by Mateta. He is VVD's man and he covers his run towards the near post. Robertson is picking up the other forward. Mateta makes a 2nd movement and run to go behind VVD towards the centre of the goal. Van Dijk stops and adjusts to cover this. At this point his position as the left sided centre back is perfect. Mitchell is about to cross the ball, if he goes low and hard VVD is at the front post and he clears it. If Mitchell tries to lift it, Van Dijk heads anything away in the centre of the 6 yard box. (If it goes back post it's Robertson's area) Once the cross goes through Endos legs Van Dijk realises there is nobody making the spare man and he still tries to get there. By the time the ball is played wide to Mitchell (before he even touches it) there is 3.2 seconds before it is in the net. In that time you expect Van Dijk to cover 2 runs by the striker, stay in line with Konate and jump out and block Eze? You people are fucking mental. Look at Konate in every screenshot he does nothing. He looks at Eze 3 times in that build up. And still doesn't step to his left. Jones also doesn't cover himself in glory. He's standing behind Eze and he jumps out suddenly to press Walton, he should have waited and passed him on to Ibu before pressing out again. Or just let Endo and Mac Allister press and stayed behind Eze. We have 6 players in that position (7 including Konate). They have 5, our lack of communication and discipline for this goal is shocking. But to expect Van Dijk to do more is stupid.
