Women's football

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in the Other Football thread. Just to ask those who suggest female ex-footballers shouldn't commentate or do media for the men's game because they've not played football at the highest level.  Well, what do you make of cricketers commentating on football? Cos it's happening right now on Sky, Stuart Broad is covering the Forest v Burnley match.

Nah.  It does need pushing (although not to the degree of equal sponsorship).  Inequalities tend not to disappear "organically".  The women's game needs more grassroots investment than the men's game, to make up for the 50 years it was banned followed by decades of under-investment.

In fairness, the grassroots game as a whole has been under-invested in for decades, regardless of gender. The year 1993 is not insignificant in that under-investment either.

If they simply had a presenter(any gender,)a commentator and a talking head like Jimmy Hill used to do. You'd have a product that was cheaper but equally as professional and the controversy/talking points would still be there. I suspect they don't want that because controversy and bollocks = advertising and publicity revenue.

From the team that gave Mason Greenwood a home !

La Liga side Getafe will change the name of its stadium following comments about women’s football from Alfonso Perez, after whom the venue was named.

Perez, who was born in Getafe but never played professionally for the club, said in an interview with Spanish outlet El Mundo that, “Women’s football and men’s football cannot be compared at all because everything depends on the income you generate and the media impact.

A bit more

I’d like to earn what Cristiano Ronaldoearns, but I’m not that good. It is what it is.

“Women’s football has evolved, but it should have its feet on the ground and know that they can’t compare themselves in any sense with a male footballer.”

The decision to change the stadium name comes just a few weeks after Getafe signed Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United. Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since he was arrested on January 30, 2022, after graphic audio and images emerged on social media. He was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the UK for attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. All those charges, which Greenwood has always denied, were dropped by the CPS on February 2 this year.

Final part

Perez’s comments attracted criticism across Spain and from its left-wing parties, including from Sara Hernandez Barroso, the mayor of Getafe from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), who represents the local government in coalition with the Podemos party.

Hernandez Barroso had asked Getafe’s club president, Angel Torres, to remove Perez’s name from the stadium.

But the stadium itself is owned by the Getafe council, meaning that it has the power to change its name.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Getafe council and the club released a joint statement saying that the Coliseum Alfonso Perez will be renamed to just ‘the Coliseum’.

“The ex-footballer (Perez) pointed out the impossibility for a female player to earn the same as her male partners,” the statement read, “transferring the idea of football as a mere economic business, instead of extolling such important aspects of sport as self-improvement, effort or equality; minimising the social achievements obtained by the current world champions on and off the pitch.”

He's right though isn't he. Womens football has to generate the revenue if it wants top wages. Imagine a club suddenly having to pay top wages for another squad when current wages are the vast majority of expenses. If women feel strongly about it then go and watch the games, buy the merchandise buy the TV packages that show the women's games and the wages will grow at the top.

Yeah. I think he is right and the reaction is over the top.

I was delighted to see - pretty much for the first time in my experience - a really impressive goalkeeping performance from out female keeper against Arsenal last week. I don't know how good the standard is generally now, but whenever I've watched the games the difference in quality compared to the men's game has widened hugely when it's come to goalkeeping, so this is a very positive sign. Long overdue - inexplicably overdue - but at last it seems to be happening.

(Quite eerie, though, to see absolutely no discussion of a possible handball in the buildup to our goal - if it had been the men's team they would have spent about five minutes desperately trying to disallow it!)

Maybe that's the trick? The fellas should drag up before a game?

The build up to that goal is lovely.
