Gerrard would have stayed as squad player if offered coaching role

Caught a bit of the BT CL ShitFest with Lineker Ferdinand and Gerrard tonight.

Lineker repeatedly gave Gerrard every chance to expand tactically on Citys misfortunes, but he didn't seem able to grasp the opportunity.

Ferdinand, on the other hand, seemed to have a few ready reckoner responses to how they would have improved their lot.

Not exactly science ill grant you, but all those clamouring (or not) for Gerrard to take over one day might be disappointed.

I'm now off to check back to see if i ever clamoured for Gerrard to be installed as boss of LFC.

I have a feeling that i might have done at some point.

I've given Moanero a purpose in life. I have a warm glow.

Similar to the sensation of the warm piss currently running down his leg.

Makes you come across as a bit of a CUNT!

“I have read the quotes and I believe he is wrong,” he said.

“Out of the respect that I have for Stevie and for the value and appreciation I have for him, and for Liverpool and the supporters, I think it’s best to just let it pass.

“He has brought out a book and now I’m the Real Madrid manager, that sells.”

Oof.

He's floored Gerrard there.

If he needed a social worker rather than a football manager than that's not Rafa's fault though. Rafa's job was to get the best out of Steven Gerrard as a footballer and he did that better than anyone else.

Bob Paisley was very cold (just ask David Fairclough) but he was a brilliant football manager. To be fair Gerrard acknowledges his ability, but the whole needing an arm around the shoulder business is all very childish. He needed to man up a bit.

Never suggested for a moment that Benitez did anything other than get the best out of Gerrard.

My post was in response to one that allowed Benitez a "that's just how he is", but not Gerrard. Neither is right or wrong - they simply had different preferences but each were professional enough to still deliver excellence together.

Ha, repped for making me chuckle you splendid quim.

When I was a boy, my classmates wanted to grow up to be footballers, firemen and pilots etc. I, however, had more modest ambitions. I dreamt of one day being called a "splendid quim" on the internet.

Thank you for making my day. Thank you for making my week. Thank you for making my life.

It's partly why Rafa was such an important coach for him. I don't think he's got much of a grasp on tactics. He played purely on instinct and needed to be micro-managed at certain times, although his best match winning moments were when he did play off instinct.

If he had a Harry Redknapp with a  basic 442 and 'just let them play' approach then he might have won footballer of the year but he wouldn't have won trophies. He just couldn't see it that Hodgson was a fraud.

He's entitled to his opinions and, having worked with the likes of Benitez, Hodgson, Capello and Rodgers, and having likely spoken to Ferguson and Mourinho a fair bit, his opinions will have a vastly different perspective to the rest of us. He knows these people on a personal level. I think that is a fair point to make.

However, it does appear that he favours the sort of people who like the sound of their own bluster - the sort of people who frequently try to big up their achievements in the media rather than let their achievements speak for themselves, whether they've actually achieved anything or not. I don't personally know any of those people named above never mind having worked with them, but I think we can pick out the ones who like the sound of their own bluster from how they come across via the media.

I've not read his book (is it out yet?) and I've only read excerpts from the serialisation rather than read the serialisation itself so I might be missing some context, but I've yet to read anything he might have said about Kenny. Kenny certainly counts as somebody who doesn't big himself up. If anything, he's always trying to downplay his influence and achievements if ever the subject is brought up.

There is zero evidence that Gerrard would make a good coach and a lot of evidence that he would make a very poor one

Poor decision making being one of the hallmarks of his career

If you mean 'poor decision making' off the pitch, then you may have a point,if you are speaking about on the pitch then that is nonsense.

Exactly. Benitez adopting his usual hypocritical stance stance of saying he's going to say nothing and getting a sly dig in. They both come out of it looking great.

This too comes across as a petty dig at Benitez.

I am not a Benitez fanboy, but think he has said the right things in response.

Gerrard, through his book, has said some stupid things that dont need to be said.

I remember reading Gerrard's first book and it was bland and boring so they are obviously trying to overcome that. Also serialising it in the Daily Fail has compounded the mistake.
