Best of the TLW era - you decide: Centre Backs

The 100th and final issue of ‘The Liverpool Way’ is fast approaching and we’re looking to get your input on a series of articles featuring ‘the best of’ the TLW era, which spans from August 1999 when the first issue was printed, to now as we prepare to declare once reaching a century.

Over the coming weeks we’ll ask for your votes on various subjects, such as best goal, best game (may have to include a ‘that didn’t take place in Istanbul’ disclaimer on that one), best signing, worst signing and all the usual stuff.

Firstly though we’re picking the best team of the last 16 years. We’ve had the goalkeepers and full backs (right backs here, left backs here) so let’s complete the back four with the central defenders. This is probably the most straightforward one but we’ll see.

For simplicity, these have been listed in pairs and it’s been narrowed down to Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, Daniel Agger and Stephane Henchoz. Perhaps Martin Skrtel could have made the shortlist too but a line had to be drawn at four contenders so he narrowly missed out.

Hyypia and Henchoz. Perhaps im remembering them as better than they were given the dross that came before, however, they stand out as the best pairing for me. The 2001 defence as a whole was superb.

Hyypia and Carragher. Carra was better than Henchoz, but makes the team for Istanbul alone. That said, Henchoz was very much underrated and better than anything we have now.

Yeah I'd be tempted to have Carragher at left back.  That back four was so well drilled.

Id shift Carra to left back. Whilst he isnt the modern full back, i still think he is better than anything we have had there.

Carra was better than henchoz overall but henchoz had one thing on carra he read the game quicker and snuffed things out carra though could recover better which almost covers that. However as a pair h and h edge it for me their understanding was just a bit better, c and h were individually better but as a partnership h and h.

Can't really look past Carragher and Hyypia for this one but I think people forget how good Henchoz was too.

I can't recall why but he was completely out of favour under Benitez so he ended up leaving us through the back door but his partnership with Hyypia for 3 or 4 years was superb - and to think they only cost about £3m each.

Am I the only one who can't see a poll anywhere?

Code couldn't see one the other day. You're Code aren't you? I knew it!!!

(if you can't see it, it's probably because you're either using the mobile skin or internet explorer).
