Back in the day for a short time I'd  help a mate run music nights in Cardiff. One club night was a stones throw from the Millennium Stadium. The club was 3 floors and we had Howard Marks (Mr Nice)  DJing on the top (when he turned up). Most of the Welsh musicians of the day would show their face. Howard was normally with Gruff Rhys from the Super Fury Animals, they were big mates. It was absolute fucking bedlam in there. Great times.

I only knew he died 7 years today because fellow Welshman Neville Southall retweeted Reverend and the Makers below. These couple are for you Howard, you crazy bastard.

I just watched an episode of Top of the Pops (23/06/1994) on iPlayer. Simon Mayo was wearing a load of different international f***y kits, there were some nice ones. Marti Pellow had excellent hair back then.

I remember seeing an interview with one of Wet Wet Wet saying that they got a bit sick of that song being number one for so long. They couldn't figure out why there were people who had heard it at number one for nine weeks and decided not to buy it, but then bought it in week ten; and there were enough of those people to keep it at number one.

I went to see The Last Internationale at the Deaf Institute in Manchester last night. A proper sweaty rock show from a cracking band. But that is a strange little venue: it's a little place with a capacity of about 200 (I reckon) including about 50 on a little stepped terrace at the back. They leave the lights on back there, so the band can make eye contact with people right on the very back row. I think that's what they mean by an "intimate" gig.

I don't understand how gigs like that make economic sense. £13.50 a ticket to cover all the expenses and wages of three bands (and whatever staff they have travelling with them) plus the venue. It's not even as if there are lucrative record sales for them to promote. Not complaining, like.

I'm guessing most of the musicians aren't on wages as such & was there merchandise for sale? I think they make a large percentage that way. Having said that, you make a really interesting point & it's something I think about a lot when I'm at gigs.

I played my first gig in 14yrs last week & made £60 for my efforts. Having said that, there's 9 people in the band & the backing singers were loading up the tab with pornstar martinis and the like, the selfish bastards.

Sorry to quote you again but this very topic came up on a music forum I frequent & there are some good answers...

Dusty Springfields birthday today. She'd have been 84. As well as being one of the country's greatest ever singers and a gay icon she also refused to play in front of segregated audiences when she toured the States.

Yeah she was fab. As well as being a unique and iconic British singer she stuck her neck out for gay people/artists at a time when as unbelievable as it sounds in this day and age it was then not only illegal but career suicide to do so. Just look at people like Brian Epstein. Springfield was not only an amazing artist she was also a trailblazer. I can understand why the gay community love and cherish her as an icon, because thats what she is.

Her brother was a brilliant songwriter and was gay too. He died in relative anonymity despite his brilliance. He and Dusty were The Springfields before they split and he wrote several blockbuster hits for The Seekers.
