Just watched on LFCTV and it showed Paisley's top 10 signings. Holy shit he (the whole club) had some eye for a player at the time.

10 Lawro 900k

9 Terry Mac 175k

8 Alan Kennedy 330k

7 Whelan 35k

6 Grobbelaar 250k

5 Neal 66k

4 Souness 352k

3 Jocky 100k

2 Rushy 300k

1 The King 440k

Throw Sammy Lee right mid in that team and you'd have one of the best teams to ever play the game for less than £3million. And 10 of the 11 were still there when he left in 83, a lot of them in their prime.

It galls me when people forget how good he was and when they say he inherited a great team. He did, but built an even better one.

6 titles in 9 years is an incredible achievement at any time but when you consider that there were 7 different winners in the previous 9, it shows how special it and he was.

If only we could have scouted players as well since.

I agree that Souness, Kenny, Lawrenson and Barney Rubble were expensive for the time but considering we were the strongest team in the country at the time, we were not the biggest spenders by a long shot. I'm just saying that his success rate was very impressive without breaking the bank.

Remember Fuge, from 87 to 95 we broke the British transfer record 3 times and have spent fortunes since to try to build teams and come nowhere near the success that Bob had.

To be fair, a lot of those prices were not cheap for the era. Kenny was a British transfer record.

Most of those signings were below the national record fees for the time.

Yes, Dalglish was a record signing but we got more for Keegan. Even lawrenson's 900k was below the then national record deal. Souness' 350k wasnt a national record if I remember right, too.

All the others were below what was being paid for players at the time.

Must admit, I thought Ray Kennedy was Shankly's last signing.

He was.

That's why he isn't on the list.

;)

Alan Kennedy is though, perhaps a bit fortunately though I'd have to see a full list of ALL of his signings to judge properly.

Don't mean that to sound too critical of Barney like, just that he was a bit of a loon of a player.

You'd have a cracking bench (maybe even a decent second XI) from the ones who didn't make the top ten: (from LFChistory)

Steve Ogrizovich

Jim Beglin

Joey Jones

Kevin Sheedy

David Johnson

Steve Nicol

Craig Johnstone

Terry MacDermott

Avi Cohen

Some superb players there.
