  1. And if it's a DCL he'll be wearing knickers and bras.

  2. Monday Feb 12: Reports today say Postecoglu won't be joining us at the end of the season. In other news, I can confirm that I won't be taking up a membership at Augusta National. Seriously, how the fuck is he even being linked with the job? Because he's a fan? So are all of you reading this and you won't be getting the job either. Ok, I'm being flippant as he's clearly got something about him, but that's not anywhere near enough to be qualified for this job. If we appointed him I'd be fucking livid. I don't care for that guy. I've been watching loads of tactical analysis videos of Alonso's Leverkusen and I'm all in on this. I was even before I'd seen all the tactical stuff, but that was based on the fact he's Xabi Alonso, he's top of the Bundesliga and he's taken a team from 2nd bottom to being unbeaten in all comps this season. I knew very little about how he'd done it. Now that I've seen what he's actually doing, fucking hell. It's proper high end, ahead of the game shit. He's not unbeaten because he's got the best players, it's because he's got the best tactics and motivational skills. Some of his key players were free transfers like Xhaka and Grimaldo. He's got another lad who was at Southampton and Burnley and pulled up no trees. He hasn't done this by buying boss players, he's done it by coaching. There was another team that took it to Bayern Munich in similar fashion in recent times. You might be familiar with their manager.... This is the biggest no brainer decision any club could ever make. Don't overthink it, this is just so obvious. Of course there's risk involved and none of us can know how it would turn out, but there's risk with any appointment as there are never any guarantees. You just have to make the decision that gives you the best chance of success, that's all you can do. And if it doesn't work, there's no regrets because you made what was the best decision you could have made at that time with all of the information available to you. It's almost like the NFL draft in some ways. The Bears have the number one pick this year and there are a lot of arguments going on about what they should do. There's a quarterback available who is being touted as a generational talent and half the teams in the league would kill to get him. He might turn out to be a flop, but if you don't take him you'll always be kicking yourself in case he becomes what the experts are saying he could be. We're in that unique situation this summer. We've basically got the number one pick in the draft as we're in a position where we can choose ANY manager we want (nobody is turning down this job, it's the most attractive available job in the world other than maybe Real Madrid, but I just don't see Xabi wanting to join them over us at this point in his career). Alonso is the clear stand out star of the draft, yet you've got people suggesting we pass on him and take De Zerbi, the Sporting fella or even Eddie fucking Howe (ok, that was Agbonlahor who said that so it doesn't count). If we took anybody else other than Alonso the risk would be much bigger than giving it to him and it's a decision we might live to regret forever. Like when the Bears traded up to draft Mitch Trubisky instead of Patrick Mahomes. It takes years to recover from mistakes like that.

  3. Work-rate. Incisiveness. Nous. I don't ask for much. This is how it's gonna be. Build from the ground up. Note this game is not on TV in the UK, and yet this is a game that requires more focus than most. City play Brentford the day before so the gap is likely to again be reduced. We also have the small matter of the League Cup final at the weekend. I don't think Jurgen or his players are the type to take their eye of the ball, but it is still something to guard against. Luton have been punching above their weight all season, and while it hasn't translated into points on the whole, their opponents have generally known they were in a contest. We saw that in the return fixture earlier this season. They started badly against the Mancs earlier today and were 2 down within 10 minutes, but gradually got somewhat of a foothold and pulled a goal back. They were unfortunate that dickhead David Coote (he who as VAR didn't see anything wrong with T-Rex's reckless lunge on Virg in the derby) deemed Casemiro's challenge from behind to not be card-worthy. He probably more than any of the other PGMOL brigade needs to hope PGMOL don't come under any investigation because he just looks the type to turn into a puddle of piss and shit under questioning. Luton had to push forward so left themselves open to the counter, so they certainly gave it the beans in that game. They play us and then City in the Cup over the coming week, but the City game is the following Tuesday so they can attempt to go strong for this one. The two sides last met in the league at Anfield in January 1992. We were miles off the pace in the title race and they were battling against relegation. Chris "Unbelievable Jeff!" Kamara was in the Luton side that day, as was Mark Pembridge, later to represent the blueshite as an industrious but limited midfielder of the sort they have filled their team with since the 90s. Nick Tanner did Nick Tanner things to gift Luton the opening goal, passing the ball into his own net following a miscommunication with Grob. We huffed and puffed but eventually broke Luton's stubborn resistance when another defensive mix-up left Macca with a simple tap-in with 5 minutes to go. It gave us a lift and in stoppage time, Dean Saunders stole in to bundle a Barnesy cross past Steve Sutton for the winning goal. Results-wise, we were actually in a bit of decent form, with the Luton game part of a 12-game sequence featuring 8 wins and 4 draws. We were by no means a prolific side that year, with results like the 4-0s against Swarovski Tirol and Crewe definite outliers. I said in the previous match thread that I don't know the fitness situation of the squad at the time of writing. Ali then dropped out with a hamstring strain in training, and both Curtis and Diogo were crocked in the Brentford game. Darwin was also taken off at half time as a precaution, so who knows what the situation is. The rotation in the Luton game might be more down to necessity than design, as Trent, Dom and Thiago are all unavailable. The hope is that the players involved are capable of doing the business. Aside from the usual maximum motivation, attitude and application required from first minute to last, I hope the players aren't casting one eye on their place in the cup final team and taking their focus away from this one. Concentration needs to be bang-on here. More than that though, I hope we get some much better luck on the injury front, with players staying fit and the injured ones coming back quickly, fully recovered, sharp and hungry. Three points please. Get it done!

  4. I said the British working class. The fine people of Blackpool who anointed not one but two Tory MPs despite having baby banks where milk and clothes are doled out to skint mothers care not a jot for doings in the middle east or kashmir, nor do they care about Owen Jones pontificating over the rights of Hells Angels to get changed next to your daughter in the baths. The term "left" is now utterly meaningless, in a sense it's become rich people's idea of what poor people want. Diane Abbot with her kid in a private school sums up that aspect of the movement. I bet if you went to a Momentum meeting it'd be like a Durham University reunion bash.

  5. Massive win, potential banana skin avoided and we extended our lead over City by two points. That’s the good news. The bad news is we may have lost two key players for the foreseeable future, but we have to cross our fingers and hope for the best on that. This was a great win and while maybe the scoreline flattered us a little, it was a comfortable, deserved win in a fixture that has given us problems in recent years. I think we were assisted by how shit they were at the back but I also think we spotted things in their game that we could exploit, and we did. It wasn’t a co-incidence how we created so many chances by knocking the ball forward early and turning them around, or the way we countered them on their set-pieces. That was a big weakness of theirs and we exploited it. It was quite strange to see really. In open play they had a compact shape, five across the back, three sat in front and Maupay dropping off to get turned and start counter attacks. It was tough to break down, as we thought they would be. But then they’d get a set-piece and turn into Keegan’s Newcastle, throwing everyone forward and having all of their players in our final third. They started well and although I didn’t think we were playing badly, they were the better side in the early stages. They were quite slick on the counter attack and had a few chances. One counter attack they had ended with a Toney shot that Kelleher saved comfortably, but it was lovely football. Konate did well to put Toney off in the end but that was proper incisive stuff from them. Toney had another chance that he dragged wide after being found by Maupay, and those two were really lively early on. I felt as though we were looking decent enough though and had some good situations ourselves. Unfortunately we lost one of our better players when Curtis went down after an innocuous looking challenge. It’s a good tackle by their lad and it’s not reckless or overly physical, Curtis just landed awkwardly. He was in agony and it’s a big worry.

  6. Great finish. I’ve heard he regularly listens to the Podcast to help with his English and is really appreciative of Dave’s finishing one-on-one tips.

  7. A big win that looks to have come at something of a cost. The Reds made a tricky fixture look easy but lost three players to injury and at least one of them looks to be very serious, but Salah was back with a goal and we're still top of the league. Chris Smith is joined by Ian Brown and TLW Editor Dave Usher to pick the bones out of an eventful game down in West London in which Nunez showed his finishing prowess, Salah returned in style, Cody bagged himself a goal and Macca chipped in with a lovely strike. 8. Blagging an upgrade to the best suite in the hotel for Mrs Tash's birthday this week. Anyone on here who has children will know that, as much as you love them, any night you can grab away from them is bliss. Especially in a duplex suite. Cheers.

  13. Of the games I was in the ground for, the 7-0 v Spurs in 78 takes some beating. Spurs has signed Ardiles and Villa and had some good players including Glenn Hoddle but they were completely dismantled. The build up to and including Terry Mac's header was a thing of beauty and is still one of the best goals I've ever seen.

  15. I tip my cap to you guys who can watch City games. I work out when their games are going to finish and give it an extra ten minutes on top before I go on BBC Sport to see their result. I have started doing the same with Arsenal.

  16. I think without doubt, some of the chance he misses, are because of how he contorts his body. In this regard haaland can be similar and misses a whole bunch of chances because of it. In fact I would say with haaland that's why he misses the majority of his chances. I don't see that the same with Nunez, which is why at times he misses from 6 yards out almost standing still. For me that's because he's not calm enough. I think the description that @an tha gives above, is pretty similar to what I am trying to say. So it's simple, 6 pints before each match and 2 at half time to top him up.

  17. Given rumours of him being out for the season, that would be good news. Ideally he could work towards the Manc game, but in reality we have a few nasty looking games like Villa away and Spurs at home in April where he could be a huge presence. One of the best players in the league. The term world class is used easily, but when he is fit, he is imo that calibre. My Evertonian mate said he reckons him and Foden are the two most exciting players in the league right now, just literally minutes before the injury. You know what, he's a massive loss for the derby. While we should on paper batter them, it will be a warzone and Diogo is ready made for them. Gutted but we have good options.

  18. Disgrace that they made us play Brentford and Burnley at the same time. Good job Burnley we’re so passive. There was definitely an element of the lads thinking it was over, but Burnley had been so passive in that second half I can understand why.

  19. I’ve been lucky to have seen most of the fantastic games already mentioned on here, in the flesh, but one that hasn’t been mentioned is the Chelsea semi-final in 2005. Not a runaway win, not loads of great goals scored, but for what it meant after going so long without a Champions League/European Cup final appearance, for atmosphere and just the will of the crowd helping the players against, honestly, a much better Chelsea team, and for putting them in their place with Mourinho at the helm, it was a fabulous night. Only matched for atmosphere by the Barcelona 4-0, but I wasn’t at the St Etienne game so can’t compare to that. But haven’t we been blessed compared to other clubs that can only dream of having one night to remember like the many we’ve enjoyed.

  27. Stopped at Otterburn Mill on our drive back home from a weekend in a fancy shepherds hut in a field in the middle of nowhere in Northumberland my missus bought me for xmas. Absolutely tremendous fayre. Really, very good indeed. Hard to find fault other than the insistence that perfectly cooked mushrooms belong on a veggie breakfast but not a full English, though once again I was donated a couple. Tomato was nice but firmer than you'd want in an ideal world. Everything else: fabulous. Somewhat pricey at £28 for two breakfasts, 2 coffees and a (huge) cheese scone to take away. 9.5/10

  28. I think that bus greet is quite impressive. We have to remember thousands of fans who have purchased tickets actually miss the match each week due to the traffic. To get that many there before kickoff is nothing more than extraordinary.

  33. I take it you favour a different Russian opposition member, RP? One that has acceptable views on every issue, yet is simultaneously popular within the country of Russia itself? I don't think anyone has said that he was perfect in every way or never made a mistake. But in the ways that really mattered, he was one of the very few people willing to stand up to the corrupt regime, call it what it is, and then have the balls to back it up with his life. On the whole, he was an incredible person and anyone familiar with him can't help but admire his courage.

  34. We should be doing everything possible to keep him as we need a really good back up. I expect we could double his wages and he’d still be one of the worst paid in the squad.

  36. I don't think Oliver did us any favours today, but the stats are always skewed by the fact that we don't usually want free kicks given when we are moving forward and we try as best as we can to use advantages, whereas the great majority of our opponents see each free kick as a minor victory and play for them relentlessly. This is allied to Stringys point that we love a professional foul to stop oppositions breaking,
