Ron Hill died t’other day.

Met him a few times growing up, seemed like a good bloke.

Yeah, sad news. I like his running gear as it is good quality and does the job. The florescent running rain jacket was really good value at 30 quid although it does turn anything white, florescent, so best to only wear an old running vest underneath!

Feel plateauing last couple of weeks which i suppose after pretty quick progress over a short time running is to be expected.

Any tips on how to kick on again?

Don't even feel as motivated and enjoy runs as much as was for 3 months.

Drop back your volume and intensity and just do easy short, medium jogs for a week or maybe even two if necessary. This will keep your aerobic system stimulated and function as active recovery.

You've been setting new pbs on a regular basis so it seems like the intensity of those efforts is getting to you a bit. A week of easy jogging and you should start to feel rejuvenated.

Nice one.

Sound advice that

As you said the progress will be rapid initially, this is to be expected and some, whilst obviously fitness has improved, will be purely down to mental belief, a few weeks ago, no way can I push at 5 min km pace, so you mentally slow down, whereas now you believe you can so push and work harder.

Working harder is great, but this breaks your body down and you then need to give your body time to recover/improve.

The old " rest days are as important as run days", comes into play, your body needs to recover so it can get stronger. Have a rest and relax and don't stress about it.

Have a cut back week or even two, less miles run and less intense.

Just go out and bimble for a little run, remember it is meant to be fun. Enjoy the fact how comfortable 5km at 30 minutes feels and compare to when you started.

An example, a marathon training schedule is approx 18 weeks and the easiest 3 weeks are the last 3 leading up to the race. You spend 15 weeks pushing the body and the mind, breaking it down and running whilst tired, then the last 3 weeks are all about recovering/repairing so you can benefit from the previous 15 weeks training. The 3 weeks taper/bimble are where you make the improvements as your body recovers from the hard training. The most common mistake people make is over training, it is better to do a little less than a little more.

Great stuff.

Makes a lot of sense that and helps.

Cheers

Any recommendations for some decent running shoes?

I mentioned before in this thread that I have been suffered with foot pain after runs and it has really disrupted my last few months.

A friend who does lots of marathon running suggested making sure you have good footwear, I do have a pair of Nike specific running shoes but they are a couple of years old so I will swap them out and see if it improves before I go book to see a sports injury type person who again, my friend recommended.

I got into running last year at the start of lockdown. I have bought three pairs from sportshoes.com over the past 12 months (and due another pair soon - been dropping hints for fathers day). Can get some decent prices on there and have been quick deliveries.

I have had a pair of ASICS Gel Excite 5 and Under Armour Surge 2. Also have a pair of ASICS Gel Sonoma 4 which were waterproof as local park had lots of mud/puddles over winter.

Is there a specialist running shop near you? The one I go to is great, really good advice, a fitting service and they get you to run on a treadmill to analyse your gait so they can recommend shoes that'll suit you.

The seasoned and younger runners here will probably scoff at this, but I've just completed the last leg in a three leg challenge I set myself at the start of the year: to run 10k in under 7:30m pace, 5k in under 6:30m pace and 5k in under 6:00m pace on Sun, Tue and Thu respectively.

I'd run 10k a few times, including (just) under the pace I set myself this week, and run under 6:30m pace for 5k plenty of times, but I'd never run so soon after a 10k, and I've never run under 6:00m pace for 5k ever, so it was a big fucking challenge for me, a middle-aged man who only took up running last year after a career of debauchery, to complete.

I had hoped to have run a 5k two days after a 10k before this week, and to have run a sub-30m 5k. The challenge, I initially thought, would be be do these all in the same week with one days rest between them. Given my plans hadn't worked out, I honestly thought this would be too much for this week, a concern not helped by a poor sleep and last nights Madras working its evil way through my system this morning.

Sorry for rattling on but I'm fucking elated! I ordered a new Garmin 245 as a treat/motivation for this week, and, lo, I got the notification that it's ready to collect from my post office just as I was taking my first post-run swigs of water this morning! God's not such a bad cunt after all.

Brilliant stuff , Jack and GR10. After completing the couch to 5k early this year and  getting regular on the treadmill , I  had a slump for a couple of months but joined a new gym a fortnight ago and have been every other day since , and really enjoying it.

Thanks. Only really got into it last year through lockdown, a way to get out of the house as I have been working from home since last March and Croxteth Park is on our doorstep. Become a bit of an obsession now (according to the family!) but feel so much better for it (physically and mentally) - today was day 160 of my current running streak.

Seriously, though. Well done, mate.

A decent amount of people in their 20s couldn't run 500m.

Our work have volunteered to run the Manchester marathon as part of a relay team.  I’ve resisted all attempts to get involved until a very attractive lawyer asked me.  Just getting my safety pins for my number.

Did you ever get the running going again ?

I've had to give up, I think my running days are over. I'd lost a fair amount of weight and got pretty fit through other exercises hoping they'd help me not fuck myself again. After a few weeks of running though- building back up to about 4.5K over 25-30 minutes or so- I could feel my left knee was starting to go again. Last time, it took months before I could run again and I don't want to knacker myself and not be able to do anything, so I've knocked it on the head.

My missus is a spin and kettle bell instructor in her spare time and has all the apps and videos, so I'm still doing 3x45 minutes spin plus 2-3 50 minute kettle bell classes a week. Disappointing though, I really did enjoy running, there's some lovely scenery around here and it clears your head brilliantly.

That’s gutting.  Is your house like an Eric Prydz video?

Haha, not far off. Big Keiser bike in the front room, kettle bells, dumbbells, various tension bands and assorted mats and torture devices in the back room, and half a ton of gym gear here, there and everywhere.

Just lacking the hot birds, sadly.

Not to the extent I wanted but have been out a few times.  Up to 35 mins now and managing 4km so slow and steady.

Good to hear as some of the times I read on this thread make my hair curl. I tend to stay at 7.5kph and do half an hour , so similar pace to yourself.

Today was my 200th consecutive day of running 5km or more, since 18th January. Also took me over 1800km for the year. Well chuffed - if someone had told me two years ago I would be doing this sort of thing I would have just laughed at them. One positive thing to come out of COVID and lockdowns......
