Underrated Villains

No way is Yul a villain in Westworld. He's just a malfunctioning robot. It's the human characters that are going round boning and killing the robots with gay abandon. It's an off-beat revenge story.

I think he was positioned at the time, in an analogue world, as a villain...

Or at least, to an 8-year-old up way past his bed time, he was a villain.

It was 1974.

We were nowhere as sophisticated or allegorical or certain in our analyses then, as we all are now.

True.

Special mention needs to go to Jaws though. That shark stalked everyone it terrorised and ate. Planned it's kills. Now that's a proper villain.

And prescient and against the grain too.

Because at the time, it was asserted that sharks had a brain the size of a pea.

My kind of villain. Smart, very competent, opposed to our heroes, but with good reason and other villains hate and fear him.

That camera pan to show the sweat on the back of Marvin’s neck always makes me smile.
