Cover Versions that Beat the Originals

Pretty sure there was a thread like this before, but rock on.

I do love listening to good covers, the radio 1 lounge life albums are pretty damn good but this beats anything for me (probably a lot to do with it fitting the tv show perfectly but an ace, ace cover)

I lasted about 10 seconds of that. Truly fucking dreadful. (Mind you, I never watched the programme, so maybe in that context it sounded better.)

I'm turning into a well-irked purist seeing some of the stuff on here. As a general rule, if you think that a cover of Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen or Tom Waits is better than the original, you are probably wrong.

Still, that's enough negativity. Here's my contribution:

And as much as this will piss off the Lennon worshippers, i still think this is a masterful cover version.

Longo, I am a Beatles fanatic. I have got ridiculous amounts of records, books etc and actually I'm a Beatles obsessive. I just don't like to mention it publicly.

And I agree about Roxy Music....

Mate, i love the Beatles as well, and i would struggle to think of anyone else ever bettering the originals, bar that Roxy Music version.

Can anyone think of Beatles song bettered by someone else?

'Better' might be pushing it but honorable mentions to

I am the Walrus by Oasis

Dear Prudence by Siouxsie & the Banshees

With a Little Help by Joe Cocker

I Wanna Be Your Man by Rolling Stones

Oasis? Are you serious? The intricately layered majesty of the original versus an out of tune karaoke thrash version. I know you said "'Better' might be pushing it" but it doesn't even merit a mention.

I can see your point but my reasoning is that the majority of Beatles covers subtract from the originals. The Oasis version strips back the psychedelic layering and demonstrates that there is a very fine tune underlying the all the clever studio tinkering, thereby adding to the reputation of the original rather than diminishing it. Similar to listening to Anthology & hearing how Strawberry Fields is built up from a simple but gorgeous acoustic guitar tune. For this reason, I stand by my honorable mention.
