UEFA: WE MADE A MISTAKE

Paul Eaton 11 June 2005

Lennart Johansson has admitted UEFA made a mistake in not having a rule in place which meant the Champions League winners could automatically defend their trophy.

Good first step. Admit you made a mistake. MOst people who make mistakes then want to make amends. Well done, Lenny!

UEFA yesterday changed their rules when they handed Liverpool a route back into next season's competition from the first qualifying round stage, despite them missing out on the top four in last year's Premiership.

This situation will never arise again with UEFA now having decided that the tournament winners will always go straight into the competition the following season.

Whoa glog boy! Looks like we have a contradiction! 'First qualifying rouind stage and 'straight into the competition' are different.

"We, as most people, do certain mistakes," Johansson said. "This is a mistake.

Ah, yes. Just keep saying you made a mistake. Keep saying it and maybe they won't notice that you didn't really fix it this year.

"When we formulated the new regulations we did not think of the possibility that somebody outside the four best in one of the big countries could still win the Champions League.

Why he's right, Holy Billy Shelving Unit! No, wait. It has happened. This decade, in fact.

"Now we have tried to correct it for the future and take a decision which may be criticised but I think will be appreciated in most places.

Especially in the Faroes, Azerbajain or Latvia who will get to play the Champions of Europe.

"If you make an error or mistake you have to try your best not to repeat it in the future and take a decision that could be accepted by the absolute majority."

Hmm, there it is again. Mistake. What's missing here, though? He mentions the future. It's happened in the past. Past,_______, Future. Is there no word for prsent in Swedish? Is there no Father Christmas in Sweden then?

Johansson defended UEFA's decision to force Liverpool to start from the first qualifying round next season, meaning their competitive season will start in the second week of July.

"We thought in a situation like this we should not make too many changes," he added. "We had to find a possibility to let them in without hurting somebody else."

You didn't have to make changes, Lenny baby. You could have just followed the precedent set earlier and the precedent you just approved. And if you're worried about any getting hurt, you could have stuck Everton in the QR1 instead of the UEFA Cup.

Hurt who? The only club getting hurt in this is the Champions of Europe. Who lost their place because of us being in it? Who? As far as I can tell, the Polish and Romanian and Turksih champions all moved up a rung at our expense.

And that is my last word on the L'Affaire Fat Lenny.

If they're changing it as and from now, they're saying in future 4th place (Everton) wouldn't be in it. So how come they're not the ones to be put in QR1??

In every past and future competition, they wouldn't have qualified under these circumstances.

In every past and future competition the champions get the right to defend it

Yet we're the ones told to doff our caps and feel grateful????

We should have told them to shove their fcuking trophy up their big fat incompetent bureaucratic arses!!

FACT!

I honestly don't see what everyone is moaning about. We all knew we'd get in and we all knew the rules. As the rules stood we shouldn't have got in and if it were someone else in our position we'd be screaming 'fix'. We're in it now anyway and have 6 games in preseason which will probably be easier matches than those we had lined up as friendlies. PLUS three of those will be at anfield so surely that's a good thing? We don't have to fly out to mozambique to see how the preseason is going? Everyone knows how things stand now, so just quit complaining and let us all bitch 'as one' about the players we're being linked with and how we'd hate to see them playing for us.
