Any reason given as to why salah was given off side? Also, konate? He's made me that glass that movie bottles of beer are made of when they get smashed over someone's head.

We do have some malingerers in our squad.

What an odd game that was. We were far from our best and struggled to contain Sparta at times. A lot of sloppy passing, being opened up down our flanks quite regularly, especially in the first half, and our goal leading a bit of a charmed life.

 

And yet we saw it out to the tune of 5-1, even having a goal disallowed through the narrowest of margins by VAR through the sort of tight offside that almost never gets called at the other end.

 

Macca capitalised on some loose player on the edge of their own area to earn himself a penalty, converted with ease. At first glance I couldn't be sure if the foul was inside the area but the replay was absolutely conclusive. Darwin then fired in a belter from 25 yards that deceived the goalkeeper completely. There was no deflection on that, just some incredible dip and swerve to go with the power. His second was a belter too, just another cracking hit. 3-0 at half time and yet on balance of play it looked anything but.

 

A very sloppy start to the second half which saw Conor on at half time for Joe (who the commentators kept banging on about that he must be injured. He might be - it is us after all! - but it's also possible that Jurgen was only intending to give him and Conor a half each), saw us again leave spaces in behind. Ibou was marginally playing everybody on, Jarrell couldn't keep up with his man, and Conor had to try and intervene as he was left covering 2 on the back post. He got his touch wrong and it flew into the net. Ibou then pulled something (it is Ibou after all!) and struggled to get back when Sparta broke forward again. We had to get Virg on, and I think the Dom for Darwin change was to give us a bit more physical presence in midfield.

 

It didn't take long for the 3-goal cushion to be restored as Lucho fired in a deflected effort. Sparta's attack eventually started to look more ragged than our defence had done earlier, so we managed to control the game a bit better in the final 15 minutes or so. Mo got a goal only for it to be ruled out, but Dom took his opportunity at the very end to make the second le all but a formality.

 

In every Europa League away game this season, we've had spells where the opposition have taken the game to us, and we've been very imprecise with what we are doing. This is still a squad with a number of players on a learning curve, but that is something we will have to get to grips with.
