Time is a cruel thing.

I havent really given him much thought or really seen him since Euro 96, Whilst i know thats nearly 30 years ago, its still a shock to hear he is 80 and to see pics of him in older age. Its the same when someone tells me Zidane has won more as a manger than when he was a player.

Next, ill be finding out that all the teachers i used to think were were good looking when i was in school, have been 6 foot under for 10 years.

RIP Terry

He was a friend of a family friend and by all accounts an absolutely lovely person. When I worked in a local shop as a teenager, we had a life-sized cardboard cut-out of him to advertise something. When we were done with it I was asked by said friend to post it to an address with a card; turns out it'd gone straight to his house. He must have wondered why the hell some random kid in Hull was spamming him.

An inspiration for amateur accountants everywhere.

You couldn't help but like him though could you, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say a bad thing about him.

He was a bloody good manager El Tel, you can't help but wonder what might have been if he had stayed on as England manager.

He was a decent player too from what I can recall.

Not pleasant to hear of him suffering a long illness.

RIP.

The summer of ‘96 was one of the better periods of my life.

There seemed to be a general swell of possibility and optimism for a while back then. A wave that was ridden beyond the Labour landslide the following year.

England’s run at the Euros wasn’t the only reason for my sense of wellbeing, but it helped. Those Saturday afternoon games, in particular, were cracking days/nights out.

Thanks for the memories Terry and rest in peace.

He was a very good coach and ahead of his time. His let down as a manager was a bit of a spiv type image and I think his off field activities overshadowed his later years in football. Was always very complimentary about Liverpool though and had a great working relationship with his players. I was only thinking about him recently given he always liked to stay in the limelight but sorry that it was because of a life ending illness.

PS,he was a very good player too and that's probably another reason why he was respected so much by his players as well.

My sympathies go out to his family and close friends.

Spitting Image got him down to a T.
