Metallica? Not in a zillion lifetimes.

The most influential heavy band of all time.

Since 2000, only The Beatles back catalogue has sold more.

Sell out world stadium & arena tours, all over the world, year after year.

In the top 20 top selling bands in history.

They may might not be everybody’s bag (I’m sure they aren’t) but considering the more niche music they play (ie they aren’t a heavy band for everybody unlike say, AC/DC) the above cannot be sniffed at.

Thats only my opinion though & I appreciate some won’t like their music. IMO, less influential and less critical & commercially successful bands have been treated with more respect in this competition. Metallica are a band at the very, very, very top of the genre.

Record sales, schmecord sales. Loads of British bands of a similar genre much better than them.

I like rocking out & I think the US bands do that better than us Brits.

However, I do (begrudgingly) appreciate that it’s not everybody’s bag. I think the British public appreciate a most melodic / artistic approach and I think that’s shown in how the two competitions have gone.

Personally, trying to split the difference, I’d have gone for REM v Metallica.

Both great bands over a 30+ year period and have multiple clsssic tunes.

Obviously the more British sounding REM did well in this competition. The issue with Metallica not progressing further is the same as Oasis in the UK poll - people think they are twats & vote for the other band.

I would have been happy for REM to have won, I love them.

I don't think the US has a standout band, which is weird since they invented rock and roll. They have TONNES of really good bands though.

Saying that, I would have picked Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band but I realise there is a grey area around singers and backing bands. I also think the Velvet Underground should have got further but (like Metallica) I realise they're not everyone's cup of tea.

The Doors I think would be worthy winners, but I'm not sure how far they'd get in a worldwide bands competition. Last 16?

Examples?

I don’t agree but I’ll accept Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath & Motörhead as acceptable answers.

IMO, anybody else isn’t worth discussing.

You know how I said you look like Louis CK and then instantly apologised? Well, I’m thinking of retracting my apology!

Anyways, if Metallica can only get past Chic by 1 vote, Slayer have no chance.

You appear to have misspelt Black Sabbath, it’s ok, it happens.

Bands who might have something to say about that...

The Who

Cream

Jimi Hendrix Experience

Led Zeppelin

Black Sabbath

Deep Purple

Motorhead

Rush

King Crimson

And that's just for starters.

Metallica have been hugely influential since they started but I don't think they get near that lot.

But they really aren't a part of that lot. That is the heart and soul of "Classic Rock" right there minus the last three.

If we're talking 'heavy metal' then nobody gets near Sabbath in terms of influence. All those bands mentioned were certainly heavy though.

CCR had a string of MOR songs, whose virtue was also their vice, in being covered by every two-bit band, and drunk karaoke singers. Whereas The Doors with the mercurial Jim Morrison leading, and Ray Manzarek's iconic keyboard work, produced less, but ultimately far better songs.

I know that you get bands who 'influence' others but it does happen that a lot of 'influenced' bands go on to become better bands.

Well said, I agree 100% that Northern Uproar were better than Oasis.

Was going to name Zeppelin and Rainbow off the top of my head. You named two more and I suppose Judas Priest could also be included but its not my thing really.
