Apparently the Empire and Rebel Alliance are called the First Order and Resistance in the new film.

 

Some of the themes seem an homage to what's been written in the extended universe. 

 

the crashed star destroyer looks exactly like a scene from force unleashed on the playstation and x Box, plus the 'good stormtrooper' turning his back on his comrades when they're asked to destroy a village is straight from a book by the awesome timothy zhan called allegiance.
