  2. On the day of the invasion my dad went to hospital and quickly became very ill. We were told he may only have a few hours left. The tough fucker stubbornly held on, but today he passed away in my arms. It's been an awful week. He was very touched by this amazing collection as was I and I'll never forget it. Thank you for bringing him that joy.

  3. It's a great chain of events. Bill sells to an Oligarch propping up a despot intent on causing a nuclear apocalypse. He gets all his assets seized, but only after spending half a billion trying to turn Everton into a trophy winning team. The fans celebrate this newfound wealth and immediately sell out on everything they ever believed in. The half a billion makes them significantly worse, causing them to become the laughing stock of the league. And then, cut off from said Oligarch's funds, they get relegated, with an insane wage bill and a stadium that is left as a sandpit on the outskirts of the city. Fin.

  4. It's kind of mad all the ailments he was struggling with at the end: left sided disability from a stroke, dementia, acute kidney failure, frailty and muscle wastage from being bed bound for a year, infections in his chest, bladder and colon and finally aspiration pneumonia. In his last few days we listened to some Beatles, Brian Eno and Elvis Costello and the Adam Buxton podcast. It's fair to say he has much better taste than me. In the rougher times in the past week he was struggling with his breathing with all the fluid on his lungs so I was terrified he would suffocate or be struggling to the point of death but he actually went very slowly and gently with increasingly longer breaks between breaths so I was glad I was with him both for him and for me. Our family don't half like having all our catastrophes at once. I appreciate all your words of condolences and realise this is quite an indulgent continuation of the thread considering most of you keep your family emergencies to yourselves. It's been nice to talk about it.

  6. The season continues apace, and the next round of the cup is a midweek showdown against the Canaries. The players will be on somewhat of a high having bagged the first domestic silverware of the season, though quite what physical condition some of them will be in is hard to say. Anyway: Energy. Nous. Grit. Luck. Intelligence. Skill. Heart. Motivation. Urgency. Style. Tempo. Accuracy. Ruthlessness. Drive. I don’t ask for much. The two sides met at a snowbound Anfield in the 3rd round of the Cup in January 1986. The Reds hadn’t won the competition for over a decade, and it’s a trophy that had eluded the great Sir Bob as a manager, just as it had when he was a player. He’d been a winner twice as assistant manager to Shanks, but for the umpteen league titles, 3 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup and 3 League Cups he’d amass, the nearest he got to lifting the FA Cup was the disappointment of the 1977 final. Kenny is another who’d been thwarted in his efforts to win the country’s premier cup competition. In those days it was a massive deal and very much a showpiece occasion at Wembley. Kenny and the lads would put all of that to rights in 1985/86 by going all the way, and clinching a league and cup double to boot for the first time in the club’s history. Norwich were swept aside by Liverpool’s sheer power and ruthlessness, succumbing 5-0 thanks to goals from the forgotten man of that season Kevin MacDonald (who started the final too), Walsh, McMahon, Whelan and Wark. No dicey “magic of the cup” 3rd round shenanigans here. Just a composed and efficient display to ease into the next round. The big draw at movie theatres in January 1986 was another snowbound affair. The 4th film of the Rocky franchise, which Sly both directed and starred in. The franchise draws a bit of criticism at times for its heavy-handedness, not least in this film with its Cold War backdrop, but each brought its own story in such a way that the later films and Creed spin-offs could use those stories and add to them. It’s not bad going when you consider that the original was only ever intended to be a standalone tale. Rocky IV sees Balboa eventually have to go up against an opponent the likes of whom he’s never seen. Apollo Creed had been the cocky showman champion, and Clubber Lang had been the young hungry whippersnapper with ruthless fury. The Soviet Union’s Ivan Drago, played with ice-cold precision by Dolph Lundgren, was just a fearsome machine. Tall, remorseless (“If he dies, he dies” after turning Apollo into a bloody lifeless lump during an exhibition bout) and backed by the ruling Communist regime. A subtle picture it is not, but it’s a hugely entertaining one nonetheless. Much much better than the one that immediately followed it. In light of recent events in Ukraine, I was in two minds about choosing a different fixture and time period in order to select a different film, but on the same note, ruthless Russian (Soviet) ambition can be overcome even if it's punishing to endure. In light of the punishing effort put in at Wembley on Sunday, it’s hard to know how Klopp will go into this one. By necessity, he’ll have to do without a few of those who lasted the 120 minutes plus penalties as we are in the midst of a schedule where we play every few days for another 3 weeks or so. Legs need to be kept fresh, and others need the minutes. I’d imagine Big Joe, Ibou, Kostas, Harvey, Curtis, Taki and Div being part of the starting XI. I’m not sure if Kevin or Ali will get the nod in goal, but we might see several youngsters like Morton and Gordon given a run out just like they had been in the previous rounds. Dean Smith has bigger priorities than FA Cup progress to contend with, but this game might see his side in with a better chance than expected simply because we need to rest a number of players. Or, he could put out a similar blend of squad players and youth which means the game might be a disjointed affair for both teams. Whatever happens, as long as our players have the right mentality and focus, there’s enough about us to give us an edge. Go out there and show it.

  10. I've twice sued companies and I've twice beaten the bastards. A local tiling company for about £500 and Time UK electronics (based in UAE) and that was for just over a grand if I recall correctly. Time actually ignored the judgement so I hired bailiffs to seize goods to the value of the judgement from their UK premesis in Birmingham. That was great tbh, because the goods seized go up for auction at a fraction of their value, so the bailff has to take goods worth far more than the size of the judgement in order to satisfy it. The bailff actually phoned me when he was on site there and was asking if there was anything in particular I'd like, like a 65 inch telly or laptops etc. The Time employee was totally unprepared and sounded horrified, eventually reaching for the chequebook to pay the fine / settlement plus costs, rather than have his warehouse rooted through, business disrupted and goods seized.

  11. Biden's marbles don't bother me at all. He could be eating dogfood dressed as the arse of a pantomime cow for all I know and it wouldn't matter. The President is a figurehead, yes they make the final decisions but it's the calibre of the people beneath them - and how willing/able they are to listen to those people that matters. The fact Trump was a grotesque, stupid fuck wasn't the biggest problem, it was the hubris and contempt for America's institutions that was the problem. He put his son in law - an estate agent - in charge of the Middle East peace process and an NFL owner as ambassador to the UK. There was talk of whole departments of the State Department being empty, literally empty. Half the reason Putin is in such a bolshy position now is because America was asleep at the wheel for four years, with its institutions like the CIA and FBI under constant attack from their own fucking boss and his cunt party.

  18. Not only is he the greatest manager of his generation, but it also feels like destiny that he managed us. He's so ideologically perfect for the people of Liverpool. I feel an immense sense of pride that he represents us. I honestly think he's the world's greatest leader as well. I think he'd be the best CEO of a Fortune 500 company if that's what he chose to do with his life. He has this unbelievable way about him that you can't manufacture. He galvanises people and creates an atmosphere of togetherness. Ferguson and Mourinho did as well, but they did it through intimidation and convincing the players that everyone was against them. Jurgen does it with love. He's a literal Jedi.

  20. Both World Wars started to punish Everton, football hooliganism in the 80’s culminating in only Everton suffering. Titanic sinking stopped them from conquering America. Korean, Vietnam and Balkans Conflict all designed to stop Everton domination. Eurovision, the Oscars, Grammy’s and Bake Off all anti Everton. All they have is best team who play in blue in Liverpool although The Brick U13s have a claim. I feel so sorry for them, robbed for over a century. God Save the Blues.

  21. As many of you know, I have a Ukrainian wife and therefore lots of family and friends affected by the Russian invasion. While we've been sat here feeling helpless, numerous volunteers are offering to drive to Ukraine borders and offer donations of vital supplies for those escaping the country. As such we have been receiving donations of clothes, bedding, hygiene/toiletry products and non perishable food to then be added to huge truck of deliveries to send the refugees. Our next delivery will be Wednesday but we are looking at doing this regularly. Logistically with most of you based in the North, it may be a struggle to receive any donations, as I live in Milton Keynes. Perhaps as a first port of call, please see if there are deliveries in you area but perhaps if not we would be grateful to receive the items. Perhaps some of you are connected with people with large surplus quantities of these items? Anyway, I am seeking your help as well as ideas and if possible donations of the above items. I am also going to supermarkets to pick up a lot of the hygiene and toiletry stuff, as in my mind this will be what people have the least amount of to spare. If you'd like to send some money towards this my PayPal address is: zebhead69@hotmail.com (not an embarrassing email address at all) for more stock. Thank you all in advance

  22. I thought with ten changes we didn't really need to take our foot off the pedal like that. We made it MORE tiring in the latter stages because we just invited Norwich to come back into it. And the giving away of possession was so irritating. Elliott is a bright little player but he made the wrong decision far too often tonight. Poor Milner had so much of the ball he must have wondered if we had a left side in the second half. We are much better all round when we keep up the tempo and stay focused.

  26. Interesting podcast as usual with some good takes. Wish it was a bit louder though. Half of my daily walk is along main roads and it was really hard to hear many of the points made with the traffic. I disagree with Dave that Kepa isn't seen as a penalty specialist. He has been brought on before to save penalties. Also, in the last Final when he refused to come off it was because they thought he was injured, not to be replaced for penalties. He has said since that he was faking injury to kill time and that's why he was arguing that he didn't need to come off. That changing keeper thing is a nonsense. It worked once for Holland because everyone was shocked and it got in the Chile players heads. But I was fully expecting Kepa to come like he did before for them. As Dave said, it would have given me a boost to see the guy who'd been their man of the match go off. However, he is a bellend. I noticed right at the start of the penalty shootout that when Milner was waiting outside the area for Kepa to get in his goal, Kepa was asking the referee to take the ball off Milner and give it to him so he could get a feel of it (He was doing hand movements as he was saying it). The ref was having none of it and said no. Kelleher must have seen that because after each time a Chelsea player scored their pen, Kelleher would get the ball out of the net and give it to Liverpool player up next so Kepa couldn't act the arse. Also quite funny that the very first time in the entire match the Chelsea goalkeeper for the penalties kicked the ball was leather it into space and cost his team a Cup Final. Finally, on big Virgs pens. I noticed it wasn't mentioned that Kepa stood the side Virg went too. He was 2/3rds over to his right challenging Virg to go there. So Virg just walloped it right there straight through the cunt. Beautiful.

  28. Our lads are in action tomorrow afternoon in the UEFA Youth League round of 16 where they host Belgian side, Genk. This game is being broadcast live on BT Sport 1, with kick-off at 14:00. Genk smashed Chelsea 5-1 in the playoff round to set up this fixture, so they're certainly not to be taken lightly. If we are able to pick up the win tomorrow then we'll face a trip to the winners of AZ Alkmaar vs Juventus. The full knockout stage draw is below, with all fixtures just a single leg, with the semi-final and final played in Nyon at the end of April: Round of 16 (1/2 March) Liverpool (ENG) vs Genk (BEL) Real Madrid (ESP) vs Atlético (ESP) AZ Alkmaar (NED) vs Juventus (ITA) Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) vs Sporting CP (POR) Manchester United (ENG) vs Dortmund (GER) Žilina (SVK) vs Salzburg (AUT) Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) vs Sevilla (ESP) Midtjylland (DEN) vs Benfica (POR) Quarter-finals (15/16 March) AZ Alkmaar/Juventus vs Liverpool/Genk Paris Saint-Germain vs Žilina/Salzburg Dynamo Kyiv/Sporting CP vs Midtjylland/Benfica Dortmund vs Real Madrid/Atlético Semi-finals (22 April, Nyon) 1 AZ Alkmaar/Juventus/Liverpool/Genk vs Dynamo Kyiv/Sporting CP/Midtjylland/Benfica 2 Dortmund/Real Madrid/Atlético vs Paris Saint-Germain/Žilina/Salzburg Final (25 April, Nyon) Winners of semi-final 2 vs winners of semi-final 1 PSG & Dortmund both won their respective fixtures today so have qualified for the quarter-finals. PSG beat Sevilla 2-0 in Paris, while Dortmund knocked out the Mancs on penalties earlier today with former Man City youngster Jamie Bynoe-Gittens scoring twice in the 90 minutes before dispatching the winning penalty in the shootout.

  37. Yes, England/Britain always felt vulnerable through Ireland. "Cromwell invaded years later to challenge the Irish Catholic rule." Yes. England was consistantly at war with Catholic Spain and had faced an existential threat from the Spanish Armada. Under Elizabeth England was basically a Protestant police state. Having a Catholic nation on the nations flank was a constant source of anxiety. The Irish Catholic confederates were supplied arms and money by the Papacy. Its interesting you mention Cromwell. The proximate reason for his invasion of Ireland was due to well founded concerns that English royalists were going to combine with Irish Confederate Catholics and invade England through Ireland to restore the monarchy. The reason for English colonialism northern Ireland was not based on a desire to exploit the great wealth of the region. There was none.
