We were playing Trent at right back and we’ve been getting progressively worse defensively over the years because football is evolving and nearly every side in the league can expose our positioning of him.  Add that to his attitude to it getting progressively worse as the years go on and that’s the reason we are in the mess we are.

 

Klopps answer is this midfield hybrid role and in my opinion it’s fucking stupid.  You can blindly praise it if you want but use your eyes instead.  Buy a Robertson type on the right and it will solve all those problems.  Offensively we are going to see a lot of Salah giving it away or recycling it backwards because he’s got no full back taking players away from him as well.  The whole thing is a mess

There seems to be this idea that Trent starting at RB and then becoming one of the 5 attacking players in Klopp's traditional 2-3-5 means Trent played right back yet Trent playing at right back and moving in to a double pivot in a 3-2-2-3  means Trent is playing in midfield and the solution is to go back (or to buy a right back and move him in to midfield which completely neglects the fact that the formation change isn't just about Trent and if you move him into midfield and buy a right back you're either in the same position or you have to find an additional attacker from elsewhere).

 

The reality is in both situations, in possession, the RCB/RCM were responsible for cutting off the channels and providing cover at the RB spot the only real difference is that Trent is now closer to the RB spot and acts as the RCM in a double pivot (and we have 1 more defender than we used too).

 

Neither is 100% perfect, but the question is can the 3-2-2-3 improve with personnel and tactical familiarity compared to the 2-3-5 that seemed to be on the decline, coupled with the trend towards overloading the midfield numbers you're seeing increasingly amongst top sides.

 

We're also yet to see what the addition of a proper #6 does to the solidity of the midfield that should prevent some of the coverage issues.

Loads of positives from this pre-season already, not least the midfield already seeming revitalised.

 

Still concerns at the back though, more through the formation than the personnel imo.
