Goalkeeper Captains?

Are they ever a good idea?

 

At the Steaua game, Pepe was clearly the one with the biggest cojones, which should have qualified him for the armband.

 

But

He's a goalkeeper and therefore can't get around much of the pitch. (Except when Ngog scores against the Mancs, obviously.)

 

So, should a goalkeeper ever be captain?

Well Chilavert was captain both for club and country, as was Buffon briefly, and Iker presently.

 

I don't think it matters to be honest. It's not like in cricket where the guy's constantly making decisions.

I'd say yes, I'd prefer Reina to anyone else as a captain. He can still convey commands to the players, whether it's through others or not. I have no doubt Reina would be able to lead by example and inspire other squad members either.

Agree with this. Whilst i dont doubt Pepe's captaincy skills, i would feel more comfertable with our captain being a little further up the pitch

OK, fair enough. TBH I never thought of Jamie as that type of player, he had the fire, but never was THE commanding presence in the side.

 

As for the GK being the captain, Kahn did ok, and those that say the captain needs to be further up the pitch I would agree, if the ball was further up as well. Sadly, it does not seem like that will be the case in the near future.

Pepe will hopefully be permanent captain one day and I have no worries about that at all.

The are only certain goalkeepers who can carry off being club captain.

 

Schmeichel and Shilton spring to mind and I would be more than happy with Pepe as ours.

I think Pepe is the best captain candidate at the club at the moment. Carragher was, but he's pretty much done as a top class CB and should see less playing time.
