  1. Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has spoken exclusively to Sky Sports News about the proposed sale of the club. Broughton has confirmed that the agreed deal with New England Sports Ventures (NESV), the parent company of the Boston Red Sox baseball club, is worth around £300million. He also says the prospective new owners are considering re-developing Anfield, rather than moving to a new stadium. Full report to follow....
  2. I thought the same thing mate. But i dont really know enough about the fine details, loopholes etc. Presumably this fella is more in the know, but i get the feeling nobody knows anything at this stage.
  3. Feel free to merge this if necessary, but thought id put it on a new thread so it doesnt get lost. Liverpool takeover becomes soap opera Robert Peston | 00:14 UK time, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 Comments (20) Let's call it Kopside, the soap opera of Liverpool Football Club's attempts to find a new owner and avoid being placed into administration. With just ten days left before Royal Bank of Scotland would seize control of the club as its main creditor, the club has announced that it is negotiating with two bidders it regards as credible, one of which is the owner of the US Boston Red Sox baseball team, John Henry. These bidders are prepared only to offer between £250m and £300m, enough to pay off Liverpool's bank creditors, led by Royal Bank of Scotland - but not enough to provide any recompense to the club's current owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett. So in an apparent attempt to frustrate the takeover, Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett have sought to remove two Liverpool directors, Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre. But their tactics are dangerous - because Royal Bank of Scotland has made it clear that if no takeover is agreed by next Friday, it will put the club into administration and then sell it to on. RBS's resolve to do just that will have been reinforced by the disclosure that there are two bidders with the resources to pay off all long term debt. As I've mentioned before, if Liverpool goes into administration Mr Hicks' and Mr Gillett's investment in the club of £140m or so would be totally wiped out. Messrs Hicks and Gillett look as though they're perched precariously between the devil and the dark blue water - or are they being squeezed between the inhabitants of the Kop, who detest them, and the occupants of the Anfield Road Stand, who loathe them? That said, the club's chairman, Martin Broughton, would like to avoid administration if possible - since the automatic deduction of nine points from Liverpool's derisory Premier League tally would make it difficult even for a revitalised Liverpool to break free of the relegation zone. UPDATE 0751: It now looks pretty certain that New England Sports Ventures will add the Reds to their stable of sporting assets, which include - as luck would have it - the Boston Red Sox. What is unclear is whether John Henry's US sports conglomerate will buy Liverpool Football Club in a conventional transaction, as a going concern, or whether Liverpool will yet be forced into administration under insolvency procedures - and under those circumstances New England Sports Ventures would buy Liverpool from Royal Bank. The uncertainty arises from attempts by the current owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks, to block the deal - which would repay the £280m owed to RBS and the US bank Wachovia, but would deliver nothing to messrs Hicks and Gillett. Because of the opposition to the deal of Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett, the ignominy of administration - which would see Liverpool lose nine Premier League points - remains very much a live option for this proud club.
  4. #17 Stefan Persson - Forbes.com Bit more about him there. I must stress this is a rumour. I am in no way saying this man has put a bid in. Although i heard somewhere the other day that Thommo said on an Irish radio show that something would happen any day now. As mentioned, we can dream....
  5. Probably. I also heard he wants to bring Sven in........
  6. Anyone heard anything else about this fella putting a bid in? All just rumours at the moment, but seems to be gathering pace.
  7. So we're playing badly and losing games at home because i copied a Sky Sports poll? Turn it in.
  8. Sky Sports are running the same poll, so thought id stick it in here aswell. A) The Players B) Gillett & Hicks C) Roy Hodgson D) Previous Managers
  9. Maybe so, but surely any player worth his salt should be able to get himself up for a home game v Blackpool, Sunderland, Northampton......The squad isnt good enough. Its that simple. Its all very well being 'technically' good, but if you dont have the balls aswell then you will fail. For examples see Jovanovic, Johnson, Lucas, Kuyt.......
  10. I hope you're right mate. Like i said, it wasnt an anti Kenny post. It was more a worried that this group of players might make a show of the King post.
  11. I always said we need to give Roy time. Even after the Northampton defeat, even after the Sunderland draw, but not after yesterday. Any one of those results is a disappointment on its own, but together, its an absolute disgrace. So lets say Roy gets sacked today. King Kenny comes in to steady the ship (something Roy was supposed to be doing!). Is anybody else worried that the way the players at at the moment and with difficult fixtures coming up again, that it might damage Kenny's legendary status at the club? I mean reading parts of his book, he was depressed when we were top of the league, so what would he be like now? Are there any other managers that would come here now anyway? Alot of people talk about MON, and while the man is a whopper of the highest order, would he come in and get us going again? Cant argue with his record. This is not a Kenny bashing post, far from it, but i just dont thing Kenny coming in will automatically make us start winning. Theres so much work to be done, and i really fear for LFC. First time ever i've actually looked forward to an international break.
  12. I dont watch films all that often, but a couple of weeks ago i signed up for a free 14 day trial on LoveFilm. They sent out Shutter Island, thought it was decent and well worth a watch. It keeps you thinking all the way through.
  13. I would if i had the cash, but i'm currently saving up for Poulsons plane ticket home.......
  14. Taken from another forum: On the morning of 26 September 1981, Bill Shankly was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital following a heart attack. While in hospital he insisted on being nursed in an ordinary ward not a private one. "That is where he wanted to be", a hospital spokesman told the Liverpool Echo newspaper. His condition was stable and it appeared that he was going to make a full recovery. There was no suggestion that his life was in danger. The switchboard was jammed with concerned fans and prayers were said for him at the Sunday morning and evening services at both of the Anglican and Catholic Cathedrals. However, late on 28 September, Shankly's condition unexpectedly took a turn for the worse and he died, aged 68, on the 29 September 1981. He was cremated, and his ashes buried at the Anfield Crematorium on 2 October. The Labour Party conference stood in a minute's silence when his death was announced, for a man who had always been a socialist. Sir Matt Busby was so upset when he heard the news of Shankly's death that he refused to take any telephone calls from people asking him for a reaction. Some years before his death, Shankly had paid tribute to Busby, saying that he was "greatest football manager ever". On the evening following his death Liverpool defeated Oulun Palloseura 7-0 in the European Champions' Cup; prior to the kick off a banner was unfurled on the Kop which read "Shankly Lives Forever". Four days after his death Liverpool played Swansea City in a first division match. Swansea manager John Toshack, a player Shankly had signed for Liverpool, wore a Liverpool shirt for the minute silence prior to the match. From the mid-1990s Preston North End commenced a complete rebuilding of their ground to convert it into a modern all seater stadium. When the former Spion Kop end was replaced by a new stand in 1998 it was named the Bill Shankly Kop, and was designed with different coloured seats providing an image of the great man's head and shoulders. Bill Shankly was made an inaugural inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002, in recognition of his impact on the English game as a manager. Gone but never forgotten.
  15. Whilst i don't fully like the idea, if it gets the job done, i'm all for it. If it was to happen, it would need to be done properly i.e thousands of supports in an organised march. What we wouldn't want to happen is just 40 scallys turning up with a box of matches and some petrol....
  16. Exactly what i was saying in the 'Will Roy last til Christmas' thread. Great post, alot of people on here should read this a few times until they get it.
  17. Maybe that came across wrong. It was meant to read, after Kenny was ruled out, did he not have a big say in who the next manager would be?
  18. Are you on glue? I haven't disputed the fact that Kenny wanted the job, he was told he wasnt wanted, so therefore, he effectively wasn't in the running. Alls im saying is lets judge Roy after at least half a season. The point about Ngog coming on against Man U was in reply to the statement about Roys inability to change a game and having no plan B. On second thoughts, fuck it. Lets hire n fire, lets get a new manager in every two months. We dont need stability at all.
  19. It wasn't just a random statement, it was more an educated guess. We now know that The King was never in the running. So taking him out, the known options were Roy, MON, Pelligrini, Klinsmann and Rijkaard. There were other names mention i.e. Hiddink, Van Basten etc. but in my OPINION they were never going to be interested. And was it not Kenny that basically appointed Roy? So i think it would be fair to say Roy was the best of a bad bunch. With regards to your second point, if we had gone half a season and were still producing displays like last night, then yes, i would be worried. But fact is, we have had 5 tough PL games. People are slating his subs, and yes maybe they could be a bit quicker, but what changed the game against Man U? You guessed it, a Roy Hodgson sub. If he's good enough for Kenny, he's good enough for me.
  20. I guess these comments answer my question about peoples views on him.
  21. Yeah mate, that match is worrying me a bit aswell. We historically under-perform against teams like Blackpool. But at least it cant get any worse than last night, right???
  22. I know he should be ignored, but this has really wound me up. I had no issues with him going to the mancs, i can understand why he did. Its the quotes since the move that have annoyed me. Why say these things?
  23. I agree with giving him til Christmas/New Year as mentioned by someone else. The thing that gets me is people saying we should get rid, without giving a realistic replacement. As i said earlier, he was the best of a bad bunch. We have had difficult fixtures (in the PL) so far, so its stupidity of the highest order to suggest he should be sacked this early.
