And it's not getting off topic. If religion ended overnight, all conflict in the Middle East would literally end tomorrow. You can take that to the fucking bank.

No it wouldn't because you'd still have the same dickheads who'd find something else to fight over. I really think you need to go and lie down because you're spouting some pretty insane shit.

It's not just that.

Granted, countries do hold grudges against Israel, but their children are brainwashed at a young age that EVERYBODY in the world wants to harm them.

It was evident on Channel 4 News a few nights back. A young Israeli lady being interviewed, in her late teens/early twenties. Suddenly breaks down into hysterical tears and in what appeared to be a mantra that had been brainwashed into her, she kept on going on about how every Palestinian wanted to kill her and destroy her country.

It made me sit up and rung a personal alarm bell, because I had a case of strong deja vu. I'd seen exactly the same thing elsewhere.

Then the penny dropped. It was while watching Yoav Shamir's documentary, Defamation. When a group of Israeli teenagers went to Germany to visit Holocaust sites, Auschwitz etc.

The paranoia during their visit was a weird thing to watch. For all intents and purposes, they were typical teenagers on a school trip. But, they had an armed guard provided by their school in Israel. Other than to visit selected sites, accompanied by their guard, they wouldn't leave their hotel. They were interviewed in their room and were all saying things like "we can't leave the hotel, there are people out their who want to kill us" etc etc. It was a sheer atmosphere of paranoia. Underpinned with hints of brainwashing.

And, for me, this underpins a lot of Israeli opinion. It stems from the Holocaust. An horrific series of incidents, that I won't downplay and the enormity of which I can't begin to imagine.

But, and I'll word this as sensitively as I can, it's not something that should be moved on from, that's not the argument I want to put forward, just to emphasise that. But, there appears to be a widespread use of the Holocaust to justify the committal of atrocities by Israel, on the basis that vast sections of the world want to destroy Israel and kill all Israelis because of those horrible actions over 70 years ago. And, because of that, Israel has carte blanche to act as sickenly, brutally and destructively as it wishes, all the time justifying their actions under the tag of "defence".

There's not much I struggle with more than trying to understand how the opressed becomes the opressor. I consider myself quite an empathic person so perhaps should be able to understand better, but I just can't get my head around it. It's horrific, unforgivable even, I find myself only thinking "of all the people".

Not remotely. I pity them, same as I pity anyone who swallows the guff that is religion.

You're kidding yourself if you don't think that land is something worth fighting over, history is full of examples.

I've made hundreds of derogatory comments about Islam, Christianity, Judaism and all the rest of them, because they are all shades of the same shit.

None of that justifies your writing fatuous lies about me.

Some frightening opinions in this thread.

Each time this starts up, it's due to Palestinians launching rockets at Israeli civilians.  Does Israel not have a right to defend themselves just as England would? Furthermore, England is surrounded by other friendly, on the way to socialism, countries.  Israel is surroudned by, and living with in their own state, people who vow their only goal is to wipe the Jews from the planet.

I also like how the press covers all the protests for the Palies in cities around the world.  What they frequently conveniently forget to add is the part about chants like "Gas the Jews" and "Kill all Jews".  That happened in Paris this week, folks.  A nice day drive down from your very own country, where it has happened before.

And lastly, the idea the the press is pro-Israeli is arguably the most shocking opinion in this entire thread filled with shocking opinions.

Truly stunning in it's ridiculousness.

Won't ever forget the strength and humanity shown by Rami Elhanan in Pilger's 'Palestine Is Still the Issue', his daughter having been killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber, in acknowledging the key role Israel's behaviour towards Palestinians plays in such events, and publicly opposing occupation.  Makes powerful viewing, and stands in stark contrast to the various Israeli officials who are interviewed and their aggressively maintained party line.

He told Pilger, “We are no different than those who stood aside during the Holocaust. We are not only complicit in this crime, we ensure that we ourselves never know peace, and our surviving children never know peace. I ask you: does that make any sense?”

Can't help putting myself and my boy in that position.

I can't say how that man is feeling, but just thinking about it rips my heart out.

It's about the least graphic one I've seen in the last while. Kids heads blown off at the back. It makes it really difficult to listen to shit like, 'don't Israel have the right...' or '3k years ago there was a land...'. Yeah, get over it. Stop killing kids, you cunts.

And the whole human shield thing, "well they were storing stuff in that building that we wanted to blow up, not our fault if there were kids in there".

How about just not blowing the stuff up, you utter cunts?
