Spanish football expert Guillem Balague - a close associate of Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez - believes Real Betis winger Joaquin is not a target despite ongoing speculation linking the Reds with the player.

 

Balague said: "Rafa Benitez is telling the truth when he says he is not interested in Joaquin. His position is not a smokescreen, like it was in the case of Michael Owen. Joaquin is not the sort of player he wants for his team structure.

 

"But the situation with Vicente is different - he defends better, works harder for the team and has got a better tactical understanding of the game - but he won't be allowed to leave Valencia.

 

"Keep an eye on players whose contracts are running out at the end of the season - at Ajax, for instance."

If I was honest I would rather have Vicente than Joaquin. He has proved himself time and time again both in a championship winning team and for Spain. I watched him progress at Valencia and he has turned from a young promising left winger into probably Valencia's most prized asset. I may get some abuse for dismissing Joaquin but he has always seemed a bit like Totti to me. Great reputation but never as good when you see him play.

Maybe, maybe not. He is basing his opinion on what he has been told by Benitez though. As has been said on here before, Rafa is denying any interest in Joaquin either on or off the record. If he was interested, I'm sure Ballague would know as he's pretty tight with Rafa.

Your just gutted really aren't you because you would like him to sign, which is fair enough but Solano and Stelios where only ever gonna be short term till Jan at the earliest. Neither of them came so don't worry about it. Vicente is the more viable option IMO.

If this guy is so close to Rafa ask yourself why is he speaking to the press about Rafas intentions. Breaking a confidence is not a good way to maintain a relationship.

Could it not just possibly be that rafas is using the spanish media to talk down a potential deal to keep the price low and not alarm other clubs.
